I'm so very sorry for your loss of Rodd, I can't adequately express it.  He was truly a good soul and the world is a poorer place without him.  With your help and staunch support, he seemed to face everything that came his way with strength and determination.  In his last fight he didn't give up till he had to.  He did all that he could and stayed with you as long as he could.

It's true that he could be a quiet person, as the obit said, but he was also very much the captain of his own ship in his work.  I was kind of a hands-on customer on my home remodel (my personality, I guess) and we had to work around that at times.  But he was such a good guy, so smart and creative at problem-solving and so expert at all the work that needed to be done, that everything turned out great and we ended up friends.  How many people can say that about their contractor?  He was special, as his many customer-friends can attest.

Whatever I could do to help him (and you) from time to time, you know I was glad to do.  He was a generous person and deserved to have that come around, and you, my dear, are a sweetheart.  You were a lovely pair.  Such a lucky gift you had of a life together.  I'm glad you had it and so sorry it had to end too soon.

Tonight I'm raising a glass of Johnnie Walker Blue to Rodd and I know he's looking down saying "Enjoy!"


I knew Rodd through his wonderful wife Kathy....who I have known for many years.  Rodd had many wonderful attributes, his kindness, patience, unselfishness and his thoughtfulness for everyone.  He always put everyone and their needs first...making sure they were taken care of, never blinking an eye at the time or his schedule....he just always wanted to  please others. He was funny, always cracking jokes and made others always feel comfortable and welcomed.  A beautiful human being who will be incredibly missed!  He smiles down on his beloved wife Kathy, his family and loved ones and all his friends and clients.  We will miss you so much Rodd...thank you for being part of our lives!

Rodd came into our lives about 10 years ago, on a referral from a neighbor.  Over the years, he and his crew completed numerous jobs for us, both small and large.  He became part of the family, and we always knew that we could trust him in the house.   We watched him battle his cancer with courage and dignity, quietly.   We will remember him and miss him.  

It was  March 1989 and  the O’Connell clan had once again descended on Denver for another Purcell  wedding. This time for Jo Ann and Larry’s daughter, Laura, who was marrying Todd Ellis. Lots of activity and details swirled  around the celebration  when a crisis arose at the last minute— the flower girl, 3 year old Courtney, was in need of a pair of white tights as her one pair had just torn. Rodd quietly and cheerfully offered to take on the mission of purchasing a new pair —- 2 in fact,  which was probably Kathy’s excellent suggestion!  It was just so heartbreakingly sweet to see this big, ruggedly handsome man walk in with 2 tiny pairs of white tights for little Courtney.  This was one of many generous quiet gestures Rodd made over the years. 
Once again, thank you dear Rodd. 
Thank you Kathy. Love you.

Two things come to mind, as I miss my dear brother-in-law:
First, his gentle way of looking directly into your eyes, and never shouting, even when in a crowd of shouters.  (This became problematic for me,  post hearing aids. . . .)
Second, his irritation with complaints or negativity.  I vow to be better about that, Rodd!
May God bless my wonderful sister, Kathy, as she navigates life without her beloved soulmate.
