A small family memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11am at Saint Andrew Christian Church (13890 W 127th St Olathe, KS 66062) with burial of his remains to join his wife and parents planned for next spring at Lisbon Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
Roger was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to those who knew and loved him. He rarely met an animal that he didn’t like, often preferring dogs to people, and had a soft spot for babies. He was a music lover with an extensive vinyl collection that dated back to his teens. Saturday nights throughout most of his adult life were Taco Nights which combined his love of Mexican food, family (including any of his kids’ friends), and playing music from his record collection. He had a keen interest in all things electronic and a sense of curiosity that he never lost. He was a voracious reader (partial to science fiction, mysteries, and westerns), incredibly kindhearted, didn’t stand on ceremony and demonstrated his endless generosity in so many ways, big and small. Family was everything to him and he was everything to his family and friends.
Roger was born in Taft, California, spent most of his life in San Diego and moved to Overland Park, Kansas in 2016. He was always very mechanically minded, and this led to him roles in the automotive field working with his friends Tom Bibleheimer, Les Shockley and Roger Hansen. He retired from San Diego Unified School District’s Fleet Maintenance group.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marthella; stepmother, Ida; his father, Clyde; his beloved wife, Nancy; his brother, Jack Macdonald; his niece, Lisa Macdonald; his sister-in-law, Margaret Kelly; and brothers-in-law, Robert Carswell and Kevin Walsh.
He is survived by his children, Jennifer, Brian and (his wife) Keli, Brenton and Terrence; his grandchildren, Micah and Bilise; his sister, Anita Carswell; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Wendy Walsh. He loved his extended family that included his nephews, Lance Macdonald, Brett Walsh; his nieces, Jacqueline (Tim) Smith, Jennifer Bell, Sara (Matt) Buschmann; and their children, Victoria (Josh) Kowalski, David, Brooke and Reese Paleczny, and Hutton and Brees Buschmann.
He also had many shared memories with his cousins in both the US and Canada that include Mike (Carol), Patrick (Kim) and Cindy Douglass, Marta (Doug) Meece, Judy (Phil) Houseman, David (Ellie) Norton, Margaret Kerr-Lawson, Barbara (Ralph) Hall, Tim (Carly) Hamilton, Tricia (Glen) Sherman, Gail (Jim) McLaughlin, and Duncan (Gayle) Cameron. He was lucky to have so many lifelong friends but especially his kind and loving friend, Ruth Narvaez. Last, but certainly not least, he will be missed greatly by our beloved family pets Bash, Luna, Trace, Pixel and Daisy.
Condolences may be left below. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Wayside Waifs in honor of Roger Douglass are sincerely appreciated.
