Born on April 4, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, Rose Mary grew up in a lively household with four sisters and five brothers, along with three half-siblings who were already on their own. Affectionately nicknamed “Mother Hen,” she lovingly helped care for her younger siblings whenever her mother needed a hand.
From a young age, Rose Mary’s vibrant spirit shone through—especially when she danced in the Mexican Fiestas. Her joy and energy lit up every celebration.
On May 15, 1960, Rose Mary married the love of her life, Raymond. Together, they raised two children, Ray and Susanna, and built a life centered around family, love, and adventure. Their travels took them across the country to places like Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando, New York City, and even on a cruise to the Bahamas!
Rose Mary is a gifted cook, known for her mouthwatering Mexican dishes and her famous family-favorite meatloaf. She and Raymond shared a love for dancing, often attending tea dances around Kansas City. She also enjoyed watching classic movies and attending musicals at Starlight Theatre and the New Theater & Restaurant.
A true fashionista, Rose Mary had a passion for shopping and was always admired for her elegant style. Her sense of humor brought joy to everyone around her—especially when she playfully pretended to swim like Esther Williams by walking backward in the pool to mimic a graceful backstroke.
Rose Mary’s warmth, wit, and timeless grace continue to inspire those who knew her. Her life was a beautiful reflection of love, laughter, and the joy of family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Raymond D. Velasquez; parents, Gabriel and Maria Hurtado; and 7 siblings. She is survived by her son, Ray Velasquez, Jr; daughter, Susanna Velasquez; granddaughter, Hannah Short; her siblings, Elvira Soto (Arthur), Norbert Hurtado, George Hurtado, Gloria Dewey and Robert Hurtado; and many extended family members.
