Sharon Louise McCoy, 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family on September 7, 2025, at Tallgrass Creek Senior Living’s Blue Sage Point Continuing Care neighborhood (Overland Park, Kansas).
Sharon was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Lydia and Elmer Rolf on December 23, 1941. She grew up in the Eastwood Hills neighborhood of Kansas City and attended Raytown High School (class of ’59). In the summer of 1957, she met her future husband, Glenn Edward McCoy who was a lifeguard at her community’s swimming pool. Sharon and Glenn were married on August 17, 1963, in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from William Jewell College in 1963 (BA Elementary Education) and earned advanced degrees from Oklahoma State University in 1988 (MS Applied Behavioral Studies/Gifted and Talented Education) and University of Missouri Kansas City in 1992 (EdS Education Curriculum and Instruction).
Sharon was a teacher’s teacher! For twenty years she was truly the day time teacher mom to thousands of primary elementary kids. Then for more than fifteen years she nurtured the special needs of gifted and talented elementary students. Her first teaching assignment, in the fall of 1963, was in first grade at Graden Elementary in the Parkhill School District in Kansas City. In subsequent years, she taught at Chinn, Renner, and Union Chapel Elementaries, plus at the Gifted and Talented Center at Hawley Hall on the Park University’s campus, all in the Parkhill District. Her career also included teaching assignments at South City View Elementary in the Center School District in South Kansas City. She began her Gifted and Talented teaching career at Jenks West Elementary in the Jenks School District (Jenks, Oklahoma – a suburb of Tulsa).
Sharon, the animal lover, watched over the McCoy collection of cats, dogs, and horses. She was the heart and soul of Wood Valley Morgans. She always made sure that her husband, daughter, and son were ready for the show ring.
In retirement, she was active in her PEO Sisterhood in the Winter Park/Fraser/Grand Lake, Colorado area as well as the Fraser River Valley Lions club. She was an ordained deacon in her church, Church of the Eternal Hills Presbyterian (USA) in Tabernash, Colorado.
Sharon is preceded in death by both parents, Lydia and Elmer Rolf and son-in-law, William Robert Colpitts, Jr.
Sharon is survived by her husband Glenn McCoy, Overland Park, KS; daughter, Jennifer Colpitts and her partner Brent Wartell, Parkville, MO; son, Scott McCoy and his partner Mark Barr, Wilton Manors, FL; brother, Phillip and Kibbie Rolf, Sunrise Beach, MO; grandson, Travis and Lauren Colpitts, Parkville, MO; granddaughter, Alexis and Nathaniel Merriman, Stafford, VA; granddaughter, Brenna Colpitts, Parkville, MO; great grandson, Maverick Merriman, Stafford, VA.
