Tom Porter, 85, of Overland Park, KS passed away on July 9th, 2013. Tom was born in Kansas City, MO on May 6th, 1928. He grew up on his family’s dairy farm located where the Macy’s store is now in Prairie Village. Tom was a member of the Santa Fe Trail Riders in the late 1930’s. He attended Shawnee Mission Rural High School, now Shawnee Mission North. After graduation, Tom enlisted in the Army for two years, spending one year in Japan following World War II. Tom was the last Fire Chief of the Elmhurst Fire Department. Tom sold insurance and real estate for many years and owned Jayhawk Kennels and Storage for 30 years in Olathe. Tom was a charter member of OPHS and served on the board and on the social committee.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen and his son Timothy Porter. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary; son, Dan Porter; daughter-in-laws, Rory and Evelyn; 4 grandchildren: Kelsey, T.J., Regan, and Paige Porter; 2 step-sons; 4 step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Porter and wife Karen; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, July 13, 2013, at the Overland Park Presbyterian Church, 8029 Overland Park Dr., O.P.KS, with a visitation prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00am at the church. Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery with full military Honors.
