The coffee shop group at Mission Bank will be a little more quiet now. Vernon McCurnin, who visited his friends at the bank daily, died on March 17, 2017. He has been a member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church for nearly 60 years. He was born in Mitchellville, Iowa and enlisted in the Army in 1945. He finished his service in 1946 and then moved to Kansas City where he completed electronics technical school and eventually became an owner of Electronics, Inc. in Kansas City, Missouri. He retired from there in 1991. He is survived by his three children: Mark, Paul and Kate. They all attended Bishop Miege High School and have remained in the Kansas City area. He is also survived by his two sisters, Margaret Turner of Des Moines, IA and Rosemary Walter of Overland Park, KS; one granddaughter, Kelly McCurnin Chapman of Mission, KS and two great grandsons, Cale and Gage Chapman. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Daryl, Donnie and Paul McCurnin and his parents, Loren and Catherine McCurnin.
Vernon took great pride in his home and the large, beautiful yard. He enjoyed visiting with neighbors in the great neighborhood that he lived in for over 50 years. Sundays were for the Chiefs games. His beloved dog, Maggie, was always by his side. He lived independently and could be seen driving all around town with Maggie in the backseat. He passed at home, overlooking the beautiful yard just beginning to show signs of Spring on St. Patrick's Day. He truly did have the luck of the Irish.
Visitation will be held at 9:30am, Memorial Mass service at 10:30am, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Queen of the Holy Rosary, 7023 W. 71st Street, Overland Park, KS.
