William "Bill" Joseph Capstack, 82, was born in Louisville, KY on July 15, 1943 and passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026. He had spent his final months living surrounded by the love of family in Gardner, Kansas with his daughter Amy, son-in-law Matt, and their puppy Milo who brought him months of comfort, laughter, and unconditional love.
Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 30 years, from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. His military career began as an aerial photographer before expanding into roles as a squadron academic instructor, recruiter, and manpower management specialist. Throughout his distinguished career, he earned the respect of those who served alongside him through his professionalism, mentorship, and dedication.
On October 1, 1982, Bill achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, one of the highest enlisted ranks in the Air Force. He later served as Senior Enlisted Advisor at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, and Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, where he was a trusted leader and advocate for the enlisted men and women under his charge.
While Bill was deeply proud of his military service, his greatest pride was his family. He shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Gail, until her passing in September 2023. Together they built a life centered on love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Eugene Capstack and Mary Coletta Jenkins; step-father Louis Kurtich; Father-in-law and Mother-in-law George and Marjorie Brown; step-mother-in-law Margaret Brown; brother Robert Capstack; sister-in-law Louise George; brother-in-law Ronald Vandenberg; sister-in-law Susanne Vandenberg; and the love of his life Gail Capstack.
Surviving are his children, Scott Capstack and his wife, Rachel; his daughter, Amy Kendrick and her husband, Matt; and his cherished grandchildren, Anabel and Rory. He also leaves two brothers, Thomas Capstack, and Ronald Capstack; as well as loved nieces and nephews.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Bill began a successful second career as a project management speaker and instructor with Fred Pryor Seminars and SkillPath Seminars. He traveled extensively, helping professionals around the world develop the skills to become stronger leaders and managers.
Retirement did not slow Bill down. He continued his lifelong commitment to service by volunteering with the Lenexa, Kansas, Police Department and municipal courts. He also found a passion that perfectly matched his personality—barbecue. As a Certified Master Barbecue Judge and Table Captain with the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), Bill judged more than 300 barbecue competitions across the country. His dedication to the organization led to service on its Board of Directors, election as Vice President in 2016, and the tremendous honor of being inducted into the KCBS Hall of Fame in 2026.
Bill will be remembered not only for the titles he earned, but for the life he lived. He believed in working hard, serving others, enjoying good food, sharing stories, and making every gathering memorable. Whether mentoring an Airman, teaching a classroom, judging championship barbecue, or spending time with family, Bill left people better than he found them.
The family would like to thank everyone at Kansas City Hospice and a very special thank you to caregiver Victoria who spent the last few months with Dad and grew to have a beautiful relationship with him.
A private family service with military honors will be held on October 9, 2026, to celebrate the lives of both Bill and his beloved Gail.
For those wishing to honor Bill's memory, there is no formal request for flowers. Instead, celebrate him the way he would have wanted: kick back with family and friends, pour a glass of bourbon, fire up the grill for a steak or some barbecue, turn on your favorite country music, light a cigar if that's your style, build a Lego, and spend time with the people you love.
