Gael Lynn Self, age 79, of Oviedo, Florida, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Gael was born July 8, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a city girl and grew up in an apartment with her mother and grandparents. Gael attended Andrews School for Girls, a boarding school in Willoughby, Ohio. She earned an Associate of Arts degree from Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa, in May, 1960 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, in January, 1962. She taught third grade from January to June, 1962 at East Cleveland Schools.
Gael married James Mayfield Henson in August, 1962, and lived in Peoria, Illinois for many years. After Jim’s death in 1969, she married Richard Owen Self in December, 1971, and moved back to Ohio, where they raised their four children. Gael was a secretary before retiring with her husband to Florida in 1996. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and Grammy, and a lifelong member, faithful servant and minister for Community of Christ church.
Gael is survived by her son, Steven Henson (Missy); daughters, Suzanne Henson Self Miller (Eric) and Christina Self Stansbury (Adam); step-son, Brad Self; six grandchildren, Katelin, Kendra, Danielle, Lauren, Colin and Evan; and one great-grandchild, Runa. She was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Tiderman, and husbands, Jim and Dick. A memorial service will be held at Community of Christ, 1006 Clay Street, Winter Park, Florida, on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gael may be made to Community of Christ, 1006 Clay Street, Winter Park, Florida 32789,
