Jim, as he was known by family and friends, was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio to Era Morris and her husband, Leonard Detwiler. He shared his parents with a younger sister, Eralynn. His parents and sister predeceased him. Jim had an older step-brother, Joe, who also predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Connie. Jim is also survived by his son, James Jr., grandchildren, Jessica and Jeremy, a great grandchild, Matthew, and nieces and cousins. He will be missed by everyone and remembered fondly for his sense of humor.
Jim served his country for 24 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery in Vietnam. The Army sent Jim to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University to complete his undergraduate degree following three tours in Vietnam. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Business at the Troy State University extension program while assigned to NATO in Izmir, Turkey.
In his retirement years, Jim enjoyed remodeling his home and supporting his wife while she worked toward retirement. Then the two of them traveled the world, enjoying many destinations, including Cuba, Venice, Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu, and Easter Island.
Jim will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. There will be no service locally. For those who would like to remember Jim, memorial contributions may be made to Army Emergency Relief, 2530 Crystal Drive, Suite 13161, Arlington, VA 22202.
