Richard Charles Schurrer

Richard Charles Schurrer, 92, of Winter Springs, Florida passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 6, 2026. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 10, 1934, to Charles Whelan Schurrer and Hazel Lucille [Libkuman] Schurrer.

Richard graduated from Redford High School in 1952 and Michigan State University in 1956, majoring in economics. While at Michigan State, Richard joined the ROTC and became an active reservist in the army, serving as a Second Lieutenant. He also met his wife Barbara at MSU on a blind date, and they were married on September 10, 1955. They were married for 63 years, until Barbara’s passing in 2018.

After a brief period of active duty at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Richard returned to his reserve unit in Pontiac, Michigan to complete his army commitment. He worked in the construction industry throughout his career, starting with Schurrer Construction Company, which was owned by his father and uncle in Pontiac, Michigan. His career later took him to Utley James, R.E. Dailey and Perini Corporation (including Yeargin Builders and Percon Constructors). Over the years, he managed the construction of major building projects across the country and served as a Vice President and Division Manager. Among his many construction projects, he was especially proud of the buildings at Epcot Center in Orlando and the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C.

Richard and Barbara lived in Rochester, Michigan for 22 years while raising their three children. His job eventually took them to Florida, California, and Virginia. Upon his retirement in 1996 they returned to Florida.

Richard’s faith was very important to him, and he was baptized into the Lutheran faith in college. He spent many years volunteering in the church as an Elder, Church President, and Youth Director, as well as serving on the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Michigan District Mission Board.

In 1962, he purchased some property in Charlevoix, Michigan on Lake Michigan and built an A-frame cottage. It was a place where he could relax and spend time with his family, which was his favorite thing of all. Once he retired, he spent every summer in Charlevoix and was blessed to make one last trip to the cottage before his passing.

In addition to spending time at the cottage in Charlevoix, Richard loved to travel. While raising their family, Richard and Barbara took numerous and memorable vacations to various locations around the United States. Later they traveled together to Hawaii, Alaska, Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Germany, England, and Wales.

Richard’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his three children: Pamela [Schurrer] Puskar (Larry), Jeffrey Schurrer (Nancy), and Patricia [Schurrer] Nolff (Jay); seven grandchildren: David Puskar (Leah), Becky [Puskar] Stencel (Jeff), Jon Puskar (Melissa), Mary-Elizabeth [Schurrer] Meagher (Brandon), Victoria [Schurrer] Hasselbring (Luke), Bradley Nolff (Julia), and Jacob Nolff; and eleven great-grandchildren: Luke, Zachary, and Jacob Puskar, Peter, James and Julia Stencel, Mason and Avery Puskar, Finley Hasselbring, and Valen and Giovanna Nolff.

Richard is also survived by his sister Johanna Schurrer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Hazel Schurrer, and his beloved wife, Barbara.

Richard will be remembered for his strong faith, devotion to his family, love of Lake Michigan, and commitment to serving others. While he took great pride in his work, his greatest joy was his family and the many memories they shared. His legacy of faith, kindness, and love will live on through his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 2021 W. State Road 426, Oviedo, Florida 32765. Visitation will be held from 9:00–10:00 AM, followed by a Memorial Service at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Luke’s Cemetery.
