The Monterey Peninsula has lost an extraordinary musician and a gentleman. Barney Hulse of Pacific
Grove died unexpectedly of natural causes at his home on Saturday September 8th. Born and raised in
Marion, Ohio, he attended Harding High School in Marion and Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. It
was our good fortune that Barney moved to California in 1972 and settled in Pacific Grove. Well loved
and respected by all the lives he touched, Barney taught piano at Monterey Peninsula College and was a
music minister at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and Santa Catalina School for 35 years. He played for
over 200 musicals in various venues including MPC, Ariel Theatre, Santa Catalina, Wharf Theatre and
Carl Cherry Center and performed in shows around the country and in Europe.
Barney had a brilliant mind, a sharp wit, a tender heart, and was always ready for a great adventure. He
found a passion for ballroom dancing in the last year and a half of his life which brought him great joy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the love of his life Renata Yundt. He leaves behind his brother
Lanney Hulse (Barbara) of Marion, Ohio and a multitude of friends and admirers.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 9 El Caminito, Carmel Valley at
11AM on Saturday September 29th.
