Pacific Grove ~ Bernard Francis Wynne—husband, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, brother and friend—died peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 1, 2014. Barney, a California transplant, was a born and bred New Yorker who came to love Pacific Grove. He was an avid walker, a dedicated Gentrain participant and a frequent attendee at the Carmel Foundation jazz sessions.
Barney was married to Mary Shea Wynne for 51 years before her death in 2003. He is survived by his two daughters: Nora Wynne Peyton and her husband Bob and their children, Connor, Sarah and Clare and Mary Ann Wynne Franscioni and her husband Henry and their children, Hank, Aidan and Theresa. Barney is also survived by his brothers, John and Ed and their families and his sisters-in-law, Sheila Sparling, Joan Crowley and Barbara Wynne. His brother, Patrick, and sister, Mary, predeceased him. Barney will also be missed by his twenty-three nieces and nephews and their families.
Barney will be remembered for his gentle voice, wry sense of humor and generous heart; for his wonderful stories of New York City history and his old-fashioned backyard cook-outs. Barney was an enthusiastic self-taught sailor and, in his younger years, a dedicated Boy Scout who introduced urban kids to the joys of hiking and camping beyond City borders. He was also the founder of our sprawling family’s annual post-Midnight Mass Christmas Eve breakfast feast, at which he’d cook for dozens of family members and neighbors year after year.
Barney had a successful career in sales at Arnold Bakeries and McCormick Spices, where he was district sales manager. He also built a tax services business over the years from which he retired when he moved to California six years ago.
Barney was simply a great guy, who will be dearly missed.
Our family would like to extend our deepest thanks to the staff at Canterbury Woods, who took such wonderful care of Dad, allowing him to live until the end with dignity and grace. Donations can be made in Dad’s memory to the Canterbury Woods Community Fund, c/o Episcopal Senior Communities Foundation, Attn: Karen Huff, 2185 N. California Blvd., Suite 575, Walnut Creek, CA 95696.
There will be a gathering of Barney’s friends and family at Canterbury Woods, 651 Sinex Avenue, Pacific Grove, from 4 to 5 pm on Monday, July 21
