Carmen valiantly fought a number of illnesses in her later years, and always held out hope to get better and live her best life. She still had a lot to do, even though she'd already accomplished much. After graduating Glendale High School in 1965, Carmen went on to higher education. She studied Sociology and Social Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, and Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her concern and commitment to her community led her to a career in social work. Carmen was in the Monterey County Social Services Department from 1987-2001, and served in various functions. Carmen was the Homeless Services Coordinator for Monterey County 1991-1997 and was Ass't Director of DSS from 1997-2001 in Child Protective Services and Community Services. With the Homeless Coalition, access of services and facilities for homeless in Monterey was provided and approximately 100+ buildings and housing were secured at Fort Ord to serve the homeless.
Carmen was introduced to Latin America in the late '60's as a freshman college student, having newly arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina with her parents Mel and Agnes, and sister, Patty. La Senorita Carmencita charmed the Argentines and Colombians, and had many exciting experiences, including fancy balls and government coups!!! She learned Spanish and used it her entire life in her work and travel. Carmen visited many places, Maui being a site of many treasured memories. She also travelled to Spain, Brazil, and Mexico, among others. Her love of art, music, and culture formed her itineraries. She made friends everywhere she went.
Carmen is now rejoined with her beloved husband, Bill who preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Domingo of Monterey, brother-in-law, Paul Smith, of Big Sur, her dearly loved niece, Masha Domingo, a recent resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and leaves many cousins, family members, and friends in the Monterey area, Spain, and beyond.
A visitation for Carmen will be held Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at The Paul Mortuary Chapel, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove, CA 93950, with a rosary at 5 PM.
Carmen did not leave instructions about possible charitable donations in her honor, but she gave regularly to Food Bank of Monterey, for example.
Your prayers and loving thoughts are most welcomed.
