Just seeing the obituary today while helping mom go through drawers in their house. He was an amazing teacher and I always think of him fondly. I’m now an elementary school principal and often think of the great memories and teachable moments he led us through.  Love to u all. 💗

Mr. Childs was not only a great teacher but also a great coach. A great mentor of the game, he turned around a Senior league baseball team that wasn't good into a champion. His knowledge if the game and the ability to get his players to play his game was a joy to be a part of. I never was a student of any of the classes he taught, but I can imagine I would have loved his classes as well. It was always a joy to run into he and Mrs. Childs at Jacks Park. He will be missed. There was nobody else like Gary, a fun guy who was able to get the most reluctant student to learn. I taught with him for many years at Walter Colton.

I also had Mr. Childs in 6th grade at Monte Vista. I was new to the school that year and so apprehensive.  My memory is finding Mr. Childs funny and engaging everyday. Steve, thanks for the reminder about Animal Farm. I too remember the book and its lessons. I smile to think how Mr. Childs recognized that 11 year olds are capable of higher level thought. He clearly loved teaching and related to children with ease; a model of excellence in the profession.
It sounds that he lived a rich and meaningful life; nevertheless I am a little heartbroken today.

We have lost a great mentor and an honored friend.  I am deeply saddened.  Gary always had that ability to see the game within the game.  His encouragement always inspired me to give my best.  He will be missed by many people.  Please include me in the celebration of his life.

As a student in Gary's 6th grade class of 1976 I can testify that he inspired me personally to be a better person. I can say that he was unequivocally my favorite teacher and will be dearly missed.  Too many lessons to list, self-respect, appreciation for learning, citizenship.  I can still remember him reading Animal Farm to the class with his wit and smile, patiently letting the lessons sink in.  

Few teachers create a lasting impression, yet our grade school class was inspired to organize a reunion many years after the fact and we definitely wanted our teachers with us!  The photos below are of a brief event when the Monte Vista 6th grade class of 1976 met in fellowship in September, 2011.  I am so glad we were able to do this.  The adult lives he and his colleagues helped shape are reflected in so many people I admire from our class.  Some photos of the reunion event are at the link below:
