

George J. Nelson, 86, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2016 at his home with his loving family at his side in Monterey, California. He was born on March 16, 1930 in San Francisco, California to George and Virginia Oddi Nelson.
George was raised in San Francisco, California. He graduated from high school in Oakland, California in 1949. After high school he attended the Vallejo Maritime Academy. He joined the Navy and was in the Merchant Marines until 1955. He enjoyed telling many of his Merchant Marine stories to his family and friends. From 1955 to 1964 he worked at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in San Francisco as an Architectural and Engineering Technician. Between November 1964 and May 1965 he traveled to Chile with his family to his wife’s home country. After 1965 he worked at the Defense Department in Fort Ord and at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, as an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer for 27 years until he retired. He enjoyed many years of retirement and traveling with his wife and family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed.
George married Charlotte in 1960 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were happily married for 56 years.
George is survived by his wife Charlotte; his daughters Mary and Gloria; and his grandchildren Jonathan, Andrew, Bobby Allan, Kyle, and Patrick.
There will be a graveside service at the San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 11 a.m.
