Ione Klinder Miller
September 16, 1921 – January 1, 2019
Ione K. “Nani” Miller, a retired business owner and inspirational member of our community, reunited with her life partner, Jack, when she passed away peacefully at 11:11pm on New Year’s Day, 2019.
Born in Sacramento on September 16, 1921 to George B. Klinder and Theresa A. Johnson. Ione grew up in the “fabulous forties” neighborhood and was an avid traveler and lover of the arts from a very early age. She attended Sacramento High School and went on to Stanford University, where she met Jack, her husband of 66 years.
Jack and Ione bounced around various towns in California before landing in Carmel in 1947. Jack, being a contractor, and Ione, being a savvy relationship-builder, entered the real estate business. Together they founded their company, San Carlos Agency Inc. in 1954, and quite literally, built their family and their firm in our beautiful and lucrative area. They were the best example of the ‘greatest generation’ – hard-working, humble, generous, embodying the true fabric of what it meant to be an American in the second-half of the twentieth century. They entrenched themselves in a community that still honors their gifts and contributions today. Jack built the houses, Ione managed and cleaned them; it was a true American success story founded on honesty, grit, hard work, family, and the pursuit of a successful life, or as many would describe it, the American Dream.
In addition to her career, Ione was an active member of the community for over 70 years. While serving as President of various directorships and committees including the Children’s Home Society, the Monterey Symphony Guild, and All Saints’ Church. She was actively involved in supporting the Carmel Youth Center, YMCA youth programs, as well as Girl and Cub Scouts for her three children.
Retirement is truly where Ione bloomed and her interests soared. A lover of the arts, you could find her every Sunday at the symphony, hosting multiple French classes each week, or in the first five rows of every Best of Broadway show that came through San Francisco. Along with her aunt, Agnes Weismann, Ione traveled the world. She loved cruises and was fortunate enough to be a passenger on the Concorde for its inaugural around the world tour. When she wasn’t taking in new cultures and experiences, she was found exercising. Second only to her beloved Pebble Beach home was the Beach Club, where she would do multiple yoga and pilates classes per day. Her family would like her admirers to know that she was still doing headstands at 90+ years old. Outside of her community, Ione loved the islands and the mountains and would travel to both Kauai and Lake Tahoe often. She was an avid skier and hiker and you could find her on the slopes and the trails well into her 80’s.
While it was Ione’s work ethic that distinguished her, her passion for culture and the arts that energized her, it was her relationships with others that she cherished most and came to define her. She humorously became known as the “Queen” of Pebble Beach and it was her unadulterated kindness and quick wit that drew everyone to ‘Mrs. Miller.’ She was a ‘Mom’ to so many more than her children and had a personality, spirit and smile matched by few. Simply put, she truly loved life and everyone in it. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Ione is survived by her sons Jay Miller (Valerie) and Raymond Miller, Sr. (Susy); daughter, Tina Britton; three grandsons, Raymond Miller, Jr. (Blenda), Jonathan Miller and Jack Britton; two great-grandsons, Mateo Miller and Santiago Miller; step-granddaughters, Lisa Britton and Lori Pfeiffer (James); cousin, Michael Goldie; adopted family Elvira Hernandez and her son, George Zarate.
Ione personally would like to thank all of her extended family at the Beach Club and the Lodge at Pebble Beach who kept such a keen eye on her since Jack’s passing in 2010. At Ione’s request, there will be no official services held but a toast will be done at the AT&T Pro-Am, her favorite party of the year.
The Miller-Britton family would like to thank Dr. Hudgens, Dr. Kehl, caregivers and friends Tai Maposua and MaryAnn Gent, and the very kind and thoughtful nurses at CHOMP for their excellent care and devotion throughout the final years, months, and days of Ione Miller's life. In lieu of flowers, it is Ione’s request that any donations be sent to All Saints’ Episcopal Church, the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, Robert Louis Stevenson School, or a local charity of choice. Please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com to sign Ione's guest book and leave messages for her family.

We had the pleasure of meeting Ione and Tina one night at LouLou's Diner on Wharf #2. It was just happenstance that we struck up a conversation about baseball and Steinbeck- and suddenly became fast friends. What a treat! In the ensuing years, we've able to meet on occasion for catch-up and good times.
We will forever remember and miss seeing Ione sitting at the Concours with her hat protecting her from the hot sun - never missing a beat as each car went by.
We feel blessed and grateful to have known her.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Tina and family,

We met Ione through Tina invitations to the AT&T parties and to her 90th birthday. She was the perfect hostess. Unfortunately, we will not be able to attend her kind invitation to her 100th birthday. She was very close to being the hostess to that event. May God bless Jack and Ione in their new home.

Tina, Jay, Ray & Michael,
I have no doubt that heaven is a better place now with Ione's arrival. Jack and Rick both met her with open arms and then the party began. I am so fortunate to have known Ione and learned from her years of wisdom and grace. She has been a role model to me and gave me hope for more life and experiences to come. God Bless you all and please accept my sincere condolences. I will see you to toast to your amazing Ione during Sunday of ATT. Hugs, Tonya

We will always consider ourselves blessed to have been able to call Ione "friend". Her kindness and love were amazing! Every time that we were with Ione was so joyful and memorable. Something that was so special about Ione was her sincere interest in whoever she was visiting with. She paid full attention and asked about our lives, children, work and plans for the future. She really always made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. I smile when I think about how much she meant to us. Her photo from her birthday party has been front and center on our fridge for more than a year! We are comforted to know that she is in Heaven, and we will see her again! Dear Miller/Britton family, we love you very much and will keep you in our prayers❤️

Ione was a friend to all of us ski racers at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort from 1958- 1965. Her family were avid skiers and water skiers as well. Spending time with the Miller family in Lake Tahoe was always fun and entertaining.
I spent many summers at Globins pier hanging out with. Jay and Tina having a blast as all kids do. Being a resident of Lake Tahoe I never thought I would live in the Carmel area but was reacquainted as an adult when moving into the peninsula in 1984. So happy I continued to be friends pretty much my entire lif with the Miller family. I know Ione will be skiing those big mountain in heaven, playing endless games of tennis, surrounded by the children in heaven. RIP.......Tim Kennedy...❤️❤️❤️

I had not yet met Ione, but she had invited me (via Tina) to come work out at the Beach Club with her. I was told I could recognize her as she would be in the corner doing a headstand. Sure enough there she was....upside down. Even 2 years ago when I joined her for a class she was doing all the routines without a hitch. I am sure her life was extended because of Tina's loving care. Impossible to replace, but wonderful memories will help fill the big hole in all our hearts.

Ione was such an inspiration to me in the many yoga classes we attended together.. She always had a welcoming greeting and often asked how my ‘boyfriend’ was (referring to my husband, Bob). She had a wonderful sense of humor. I shall miss her.

I was most impressed by Ione, as a guest of hers one Easter at the Beach Club, by her respect, interest and love of all around her. From server to prestigious member, she was equally kind to all. I learned a lot that day that richness isn't about how much money you have but the warmth in your heart. She was a great example of how to live.

I will treasure all of the many adventures that I shared with my dear friend Ione...from shows at The Forest Theatre, to dinners at Cypress Inn , to hours doing word puzzles together, to just everyday afternoons chatting and laughing while sitting on her back porch watching the beautiful view.
Ione has a special place in my heart and those of my family. She will be deeply missed by so many. She was a wise, loving and loyal friend that I feel so grateful to call my dear friend. She lived an amazing life for 97 years. I know she is now reunited with her husband Jack...but still miss dropping in for visits and an afternoon phone call. I think that anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her and spending time with her shares my gratitude and love for our dear Ione. Anne V
