June 1, 1925 – September 17, 2012
Jim Art, a resident of Carmel Valley for 20 years, passed away peacefully at home on September 17th, 2012. Born in Spokane, Washington on June 1, 1925 to Jeanette and Carl William , Jim was raised in Seattle. He graduated from Queen Anne High School where he was leader of his swing band, the Sophisticates, and from the University of Washington where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and crewed for the Huskies.
Jim was a WWII veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He married Joan Vilas of Seattle in 1950 and, after the birth of daughter Susan and son Brian, moved to Lafayette and then Palo Alto. He had successful careers with Scott Paper Company and Container Corporation of America. In retirement, he became an enrolled agent to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service.
After his wife Joan died, Jim met and married Maggie Whitlock of Menlo Park in 1990. They shared a love of travel and of bridge, tennis, golf, and cultural events both in Carmel and Palm Desert. He was a member of the Stillwater Club and an accomplished pianist. He attended the Church in the Forest.
Jim will be remembered as a caring man who viewed each new day as a gift. We will miss his optimism, integrity, and his genuine love for family, friends and country.
Jim is survived by his wife, Maggie, his daughter, Susan Art Mamer, and her husband, John, of Los Angeles, his son Brian Art and his wife, Rosalyn, of Berkeley, his granddaughter, Lauren Mamer, his stepson David Whitlock, wife, Dakota, and their daughter, Elizabeth, and his nephews Rick, Hank, and Jon.
