Born in Oakes, North Dakota, to Samuel and Virginia (Kittelson) Rossman, Jim grew up in Huron, South Dakota, alongside his two younger sisters, Susan and Margaret. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines. He went on to enjoy a career as a food scientist with Durkee Foods, where his research on fat emulsions led to the development of the beloved 1-2-3 Jell-O dessert.
On November 30, 1974, Jim married the love of his life, Giovanna “Gigi” Rossman. The couple moved to Ohio, but after five years, including two record-breaking long and cold winters, Gigi decided she'd had enough, and Jim happily returned with her to California. They first settled in Rocklin, where Jim established his own vending business and continued his passion for fine food through a local Gourmet Group. They later moved to Monterey to be closer to family before settling at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove.
Jim's greatest joy was his family. He lovingly cared for Gigi's parents, Frank and Violet, and her Aunt Evelyn, becoming a pillar of the Cusenza-Bileci family. Jim and Gigi welcomed Michelle Vondra into their family during her high school years and later took great pride in helping raise their grandchildren, Angela, Nicholas, and Sasha Vondra. Together, Jim and Gigi were also proud godparents to Michael Wecker and Bella Cortez.
Known for his analytical mind, steel-trap memory, and wonderfully dry humor, Jim could recall nearly every date, direction, and detail. Just when you thought he wasn't listening, he'd deliver a perfectly timed remark that left everyone laughing.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 52 years, Gigi; his grandchildren, Angela, Nicholas (Kristie), and Sasha Vondra; and his sister, Margaret (Dale) Oechsle of Hitchcock, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan Demmers.
Jim will be remembered for his extraordinary mind, his unwavering devotion to those he loved, and the quiet ways he made life better for those around him. Though he could remember nearly everything, it is the countless little things he did for others that his family will remember most.
Gone but never forgotten.
