John E. Conley passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, October 19. Born April 1, 1912 in Sayre, PA, he was the beloved son of Kathryn Agatha nee Mannix and John Patrick Conley. Captain Conley was a graduate of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, Class of 1934. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy under Admirals Chester Nimitz and James Vincent Forrestall.
Following the war, Mr. Conley embarked on his career as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun Papers in Baltimore, Maryland. He was later employed by Charles P. McCormick of McCormick & Company in Baltimore and then was Vice-President of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) in Washington, DC. In 1972, Mr. Conley and his wife moved to the Monterey Peninsula where he opened a West Coast branch of NADA.
Mr. Conley was an excellent golfer and enjoyed playing the courses of the Monterey Peninsula. He served as an usher at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore, was a parishioner at Carmel Mission Basilica and an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Conley was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Hoyt Conley, and his son, Gregory Hoyt Conley. He is survived by his daughter, Barrington Conley McCleary, his granddaughters, Amy Barrington McCleary of Walnut Creek and Kimberly McCleary Kihnley, a great-grandson and great-granddaughter of Colorado and his niece, Mary Catherine Albaugh of Newbury, Ohio.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this Friday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Carmel Mission Basilica. Inurnment will take place at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Baltimore. Memorial gifts are preferred to Carmel Mission Preservation Fund, 3080 Rio Road, Carmel, CA, 93923.
