

John Griffin Cryan, Jr., a retired golf industry sales executive, died June 16, 2012 at his home in Monterey, CA. He was born in Buffalo, New York on April 24, 1932. He lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 31 years.
Mr. Cryan retired from the US Air Force in 1971 after serving for over 20 years. Service included tours of duty in Germany, Missouri, USAF Academy, Colorado Springs, CO; Hawaii and Vietnam. Service awards included The Army of Occupation Medal (Germany); Air Medal; Vietnam Service Medal and The Meritorious Service Medal. He was a freshman golf coach at US Air Force Academy, Basketball official for the Big 8 and WAC conference. Following his Air Force retirement, Mr. Cryan worked as a PGA Golf Professional in Hawaii at Hickam AFB Mamala Bay. He was the 1974 Aloha PGA section champion. He was the commissioner of Basketball official’s for the University of Hawaii. He was employed with various golf companies in a sales, marketing and management capacity before fully retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Northern California Golf Reps Association, The Spanish Bay Club of Pebble Beach. He was also a member, volunteer and Eucharistic Minister at Carmel Mission Basilica. He enjoyed traveling both internationally and domestically. He also enjoyed golf, attending sporting events and especially his beloved San Francisco Giants, as well as spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather. John, always the life mentor in many areas especially spiritually, family, friends, sports and business.
He is survived by two sisters, Cathy (David) Fitzpatrick of Buffalo, NY, Margot Blais of NC, two sons, Stephen Cryan of Pinehurst, NC and Michael Cryan of HI, six daughters, Christine (Bryce) Borisch of Oregon City, OR, Maureen Breslin of Milton, NY, Kathleen Cryan of Newburgh, NY, Colleen (Gary) Giametta of Highland, NY, Eileen (Brian) Morehead of Newburgh, NY and Laureen (Tim) Baldwin of Walden, NY. One stepson Timothy Culkin of HI, two stepdaughters, Cindy Culkin of Englewood, CO, Theresa Culkin of Southern CA, 12 grandchildren, one step granddaughter and 1 great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret Collins Cryan, his second wife Shirley Culkin Cryan, son Kevin Cryan, stepson Thomas Culkin, son-in-law Alex Breslin and daughter-in-law Nina Cryan.
John was also survived by his wife Diana Pavloff Cryan, her children Marina (John) Yurkovic, Michael (Kathy) Pavloff, Mark (Christine) Pavloff, 8 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Carmel Mission Basilica on Friday, June 22, 2012 at 10:30a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Augustine Church in Highland, NY, Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Internment will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Marlboro, New York.
