John Stuart Harvey

September 30, 1955November 4, 2012

John (Jack) Stuart Harvey was born to John Stuart and Catherine Harvey on September 30, 1955 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The family moved to Walton-on-Thames, England for 6 years and then returned to Hudson, Quebec where Jack graduated from Hudson High School 1972.

Jack started his 28 years of employment with HSBC in 1978 and held several titles in a variety of branches throughout Canada and the States. On November 5, 1988, he married Rita Budinsky and had two children, Laura and Scott, who were his greatest pride and joy.

In 1993, Jack moved his family to Monterey and was happy to be away from the cold and snow. Jack’s heart remained in Canada, especially after purchasing a cottage at Lake Simcoe where his 10 years of summer fun began. He loved boating, fishing and socializing with family and friends.

The family became greatly involved with the JDRF to help find a cure for diabetes, a cause very dear to his heart when his daughter Laura was diagnosed. Community work was a passion for Jack as was helping those less fortunate. He held board positions with the Salinas Chamber of Commerce and Rebuilding Together and was always available to help local churches.

Jack’s intelligence, caring heart and kind demeanor affected everyone who crossed his path. He had a wide circle of friends and associates and will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

Jack is survived by Rita Harvey; his children, Laura (Justin) Clark and Scott Harvey and his siblings, David Harvey, Patricia (Mike) Finnegan and Jane (James) Patterson. He is also survived by many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews from Canada, Scotland, England and New Zealand.

A memorial service will be held at Salinas Valley Community Church on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 49 Stevenson St., Ste. 1200, San Francisco, 94105.

Jack, you were a kind and wonderful man with an incredible sense of humour. I will always remember our special times together flying around Carmel in the little Piper Cub and our magical flight in the Cirrus to Lake Tahoe for breakfast. Memories you never forget. My thoughts and prayers are with Rita, Laura and Scott. God bless.

I knew Jack from my stint at HSBC - he was a great support to me personally through some very tough times, and a man whose integrity, charisma, humour, and leadership were an inspiration to many. A very sad loss - the world is poorer place without him. My thoughts are with all those whose lives he touched.

I always remember Jack enjoying his fishing at the cottage on Lake Simcoe, we still refer to the cottage as Jack's place.

I worked with Jack when he came down from Toronto to work in Chicago (as I had several years earlier). He was a good guy and fun to be with. My condolences to his family.

We'll always remember Jack as a great sense of humor and voice of reason in a world of chaos. Everyone was richer to have known him.

Jack, while a late comer with the news, I was certainly taken back by the sequence of events. I vividly recall our relationship at HI and particularly HCS. Your ability to deal with deal with difficult situations with professionalism, grace, and a smile is a great memory that will always be with me. Godspeed and rest in peace. Throughout our lives we have the opportunity to meet (and in my case work with) genuinely good, kind people - that would be Jack Harvey!! Jack was one of my 22 "bosses" at the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce and an absolute joy to be around. My sincere sympathy to Jack's family on their huge loss.
