Joseph Francis Golden was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1920. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942 with an Honors Degree in English, served in Occupied Guadalcanal, and met his wife of 60 years, Janet, at the University of Michigan where he earned a Master’s Degree. They moved to California where he taught at St. Mary’s College, then co-founded the Junipero Serra Catholic book and art store in San Francisco, organized lectures and colloquia throughout the Bay Area, and hosted a book discussion program on KGO. In 1969, he moved the shop to Monterey, and then began teaching adult education courses throughout the Monterey Peninsula. Joe and Janet moved to Canterbury Woods in Pacific Grove in 1989. Thanks to all his friends for their love and support, and special gratitude to the staff at Canterbury Woods who loved and cared for him for so many years. Everybody who met Joe was touched by his kindness and courtesy. He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Kate Golden (John Fields) and Ann Golden; his granddaughters, Emily, Claire and Eve, and his great-granddaughters, Nicoletta, Zoe and Nora. They were the joy of his life. As many said of him, Joseph Golden was a gentleman and a gentle man. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove tomorrow, Thursday, September 14 at 10 :30 followed by a private family ceremony at San Carlos Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, CA.

Joe and Janet will remain in my heart always. They adopted us, both humanly and spiritually. We shared so many evenings talking, reading, praying. They were wonderful mentors to me, my husband, and our growing family; so generous, kind, wise, joyful. Their lives touched mine deeply, and they will never be forgotten. My deepest sympathy at your loss. How grateful I am for Joe's wonderful life and for the equally wonderful life of his beloved Janet.

God bless,

Joe and Janet were good friends to me when I visited Pacific Grove after the death of my parents in 2000-2001. Janet showed me proofs of a book she was writing and Joe had limitless ideas about books, authors, and current events.

Eddie and I will never forget how Joe and Janet adopted us when we moved to California. They were our "spiritual" parents. Our sympathies to all of you.

I saw Joe almost every day for the 20 years I worked at Bookworks. He always had a smile and tipped his hat. He was a treasure and full of ideas of books to read.

Joe gave us all so much--his kindness, his wit, his rich background and interest in literature. I am blessed that he was at Canterbury Woods.
You have all been wonderful to him and he enjoyed and was so proud of all of you.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

To a wonderful gentleman,
We had the privilege of knowing Joe at Saint Angela's. He was a regular at the 10 o'clock Mass and so were we.
Joe would take a cab to mass but we noticed that his return taxi ride home was often delayed. So we offered to give him a ride. That became our routine. Joe was always ready for a little "car pool" conversation. He was very sharp. And we enjoyed chatting with him. He never failed to offer a hand shake & say thanks for the ride...
He was a special man & will be missed!
