Carmel Valley - Keith Irvin Wilson, 76, passed away December 18, 2011. He was born December 24, 1934 in Laura, Kentucky, the middle son of Keither and Lizzie Wilson. Irv grew up in Turkey Creek, Kentucky where he attended school and graduated from Belfry High School in 1953. He then attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia on a full football scholarship. A starting lineman for the Marshall football team for three years, Irv also received varsity letters in wrestling and baseball. He remained close friends with his football coach, Sam Clagg, of Huntington, West Virginia. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1957.
Irv was named head coach of Belfry High School in 1957 and led the school to its top-ten rating in Kentucky, the first in the school’s history. After several years of teaching and coaching in the Detroit area, Irv and his family moved to Kent, Ohio where he taught math and was head football coach at Kent State University High School. He completed his Masters Degree at Purdue University in 1964 and then went on to complete his Doctorate Degree in Educational Measurement at Kent State University. In 1973, Irv began working for CTB McGraw-Hill as a consultant in the State of Ohio. In 1978, he relocated to work as a Product Manager at CTB/McGraw-Hill in Monterey, California, retiring from CTB in 1998.
Irv loved life and enjoyed life to the fullest. An active man with many interests, he enjoyed traveling from his early days camping across the United States with his family to his many trips abroad. Irv was a master woodworker and enjoyed producing fine furniture and cabinetry. He loved to cook and try new recipes. Irv was passionate about photography and capturing great photos of his family, friends, and travel. Dedicated to genealogy, in addition to that of his own family, he spent many hours also researching for friends.
Irv married Ruth Ann Varney in 1956 until she preceded him in death in 1981. He is survived by his daughter, Ronna Wilson (Tom) Hocevar and his grandson, Dylan Hocevar, all of Elk Grove, California; his brothers, Clifford (Jean) and Cullen (Beverly) Wilson of Lexington, Kentucky; several nieces, nephews and cousins and numerous close friends.
A Celebration of Irv’s Life will be held in mid-January 2012, followed by a private family inurnment service at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove, California. In lieu of flowers, an expression of sympathy may be made to Belfry Boosters Athletic Club, P. O. Box 160, Belfry, Kentucky, 41514.
