Marjorie Jean Thompson Arcanin, age 94, passed away at her home in Pacific Grove, CA. The grandchild of early California settlers, she was born in Lodi, CA, to Walter L. Thompson and Leah Handel Thompson. As a young girl, Marjorie was imaginative, a great reader, and enjoyed rowing and swimming in Lodi Lake. She became a woman of depth and insight, who cared about those in need. She lived her life in a spirit of service with a sense of purpose and commitment.
She grew up in Lodi, CA, graduated from Lodi Union High School, and attended nurses training at Stockton College/San Joaquin General Hospital. She moved to Oakland, where she began her career and met her future husband, John Nicholas Arcanin. They raised two children together before John died in 1969. In 1975, Marjorie returned to Stockton to assume the position of Manager for the State of California Disability Insurance Office, retiring in 1984 after 25 years of service.
Marjorie was very active in Stockton’s First Congregational Church and also served on the Boards of Habitat for Humanity and the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. She traveled widely, collecting masks from many different places. In 2003, Marjorie joined the Canterbury Woods Community in Pacific Grove, CA, where she continued to live a very full life.
She is survived by brother Verne Thompson; daughters Geva Arcanin and Margo Arcanin; grandsons Nicholas Ratto (Andrea Cook), Dr. Matthew Ratto (Dr. Tina Meisami) and Dr. Timothy Ratto (Dr. Maggie Bostick), granddaughter, Erica Perkins; five great granddaughters Pari, Dylan, Piper, Jia, and Sasha.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 13, 2:00pm-4:00pm, at Canterbury Woods in the Lounge, 651 Sinex Ave., Pacific Grove. Memories and words of sympathy may be offered at The Paul Mortuary Tributes website. Donations may be made in her name to your favorite charity or to the Episcopal Homes Foundation c/o Canterbury Woods. The family wishes to thank the administrators and staff of Canterbury Woods, Dr. Dan Waligora, Dr. Glen Hudgens, and Hospice of the Central Coast for their care.
