Mary and Verne were dear friends of my husband Eddie and myself.  Mary was a gracious and welcoming presence.  She loved her family very much.  She touched many of our lives in gentle ways. My caring thoughts are with the family.

Mary Williams was a friend of mine for several years.  She was a lovely lady who loved to sing with our group, BROTHERLY LOVE when we would visit Forest Hill Manor twice a month.  We will miss her very much.

Mary Froehlich Williams was born in San Jose, CA the fourth of January, 1922, the second of four children of Charles and Ruth Froehlich.. After ten years on Shasta Avenue the family moved  to Hayward when her father's job was transferred to the Hunt Bros. cannery there. During her youth there she discovered or developed an interest in music and small dogs, both of which she was to pursue the rest of her life. She played the piano and studied the singing of favorite stars like Deanna Durbin.

She went to San Jose State for a Bachelor's degree in teaching and met Verne Williams at one of the school dances. During the war years they got to know and love each other and married in August, 1945 when it looked like the war might end after all.

Verne was from Pacific Grove and he brought his bride back to his home town where they were to live, except for a brief interval in San Bruno for the rest of their days.

Mary pursued her singing interests in the Methodist church choir and in Monterey's Choraleers. At home she raised three children, several cats and a series of small dogs several of which bore a resemblence to her pet from childhood. Cooking was always important and she developed a fine hand with local fish including her recipe for Cioppino sauce that was a hit with family and friends.

She served on the Board of the PG Museum and participated in the Heritage Society's open house tours. She developed an interest in the Monterey Historical Societies collection of dresses from the Spanish/Mexican era and helped curate them.

The children slipped away to pursue careers elsewhere but were always assured a welcome at the home she and Verne stayed in until he passed in 1999. She has lived at Forest Hill Manor for the last 15 years.
