Richard Myers Young

He graduated from Mason High School in 1939 and later attended Manchester College for two years as a music major. Richard then attended and graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in New York. He served his country on active duty in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946, then in the Naval reserves from 1946 to 1981, retiring with the rank of Commander. After the war, he studied at Purdue University, graduating with a Bachelors of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1949. A believer in life-long learning, Richard completed his Master’s Degree at Stanford University in 1962, earning a Masters of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

Richard worked as an engineer with Boeing, Hiller Helicopter and Lockheed, retiring from Lockheed in 1987. Having always loved the ocean, Richard and his wife, Margery, moved to Pebble Beach in 1987. His favorite hobbies included sailing and walking along the beach, but his greatest love was always flying. He volunteered his time with Big Brothers and with Meals on Wheels.

Richard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margery Young; his daughters, Susan and Christine, their husbands, Tony Day and Joel Pascal; and his grandchildren, Alison Day, Daniel Clifford, and Matthew Clifford. His sister, Joanne Rapp of Cincinnati, Ohio also survives him, as do many nieces and nephews.

Richard’s family would like to express their deep gratitude for the excellent care given to him by Dr. Richard King, Dr. Riaz Ahmed, the Wound Healing Center of CHOMP, and his home caregiver, Olga.
