Rita Evangeline Kramer Titus January 27, 1927 – January 24, 2018 Pacific Grove, California

Rita Evangeline Kramer Titus was an extraordinarily loving and devoted child, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She had a sweet nature, full of loving kindness, and was also known for her mischievous sense of humor and sharp wit. A strong and resilient woman of faith, she endured great sorrow yet also found and created great joy in life.

Born in New York City and raised in Brooklyn and Long Island, Rita was the eldest of six children born to John Conrad Kramer and Margaret Anna Kenny. She graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth in 1948 and married Thomas Joseph Stewart in 1950. They had six children, but the youngest, Paul Tierney Stewart, passed away as a small child. Rita and Thomas were divorced in 1974.

In 1977, Rita married Joseph (Jay) Parker Titus, Jr. and began a whole new life of love and adventure, traveling with him around the country and to Europe on hiking and climbing trips, and coming to know and love his five children and their families. Rita and Jay shared a passion for the mountains, but Rita had a special attachment to the sea. They divided their time between their home in Oakhurst in the Sierras and their home in Pacific Grove for many years. They enjoyed hiking the Asilomar Beach trails and took up square dancing when they lived in Oakhurst.

Rita worked in a number of different fields over the course of her life: as a recipe tester and writer for the Woman’s Home Companion right after college, as a hospital dietician when her children were young, and later as a buyer for Bullock’s Department Stores and as the Assistant to the Social Services Director at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. She was interested in the world, open-minded, and a life-long student of languages, art, and architecture.

Rita is remembered with great love by all her children: Thomas and Joanne Stewart, Megan Black, John and Jeannie Marie Stewart, Pamela and George Chant, Amy Stewart and Miles Handley, Larry and Nancy Titus, James and Amy Stewart, Jerry and Suzanna Titus, Jo-Marie and Jay Rowe, and Stephanie and Bradley Mallory, and by 33 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, February 1, 2018, from 5 pm to 8 pm, with a Rosary service at 7 pm, at The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 2, 2018, at 11 am at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, Lighthouse & 9th, Pacific Grove, CA 93950, followed by a graveside service at El Carmelo Cemetery, Asilomar at Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove, CA 93950. A celebration of Rita’s life will be held from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Point Pinos Grill, 79 Asilomar Boulevard, by the Pacific Grove Golf Links.

Dearest Rita, you are such a huge part of my life. You taught me how to care for Alex, loved me in the darkest years of my life and always welcomed me. You were the Mom I never had and l will love you and cherish the time I had with you the rest of me life. You and Jay successfully pulled 10 kids and all of their families together because your heart knew no boundaries and there was always love for one more. I
