

A funeral service for Robert William Gartin will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 12, at the St. Angela of Merici Catholic Church on 146 8th Street in Pacific Grove. He died on Friday, March 6, 2015 at the age of 88. Bob was a resident of Pacific Grove, California.
Bob was born on September 26, 1926 to Lotus and Hortense Gartin in Whittier, CA. He graduated from Whittier High School on July 6, 1944. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1944-1946. Bob attended and graduated from Whittier College in June of 1950. He went on to get his Masters of Science degree from the University of Southern California in June of 1955.
Bob loved education and devoted his career to working 30 years in the education system in California. He was honored for his work with special education by the Department of Education in California. Bob also worked in the flooring business for a time with his sister and brother-in-law, Gerry and Glen, in southern California.
We remember our beloved Bob for his example as a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was always happy and loved being with others. He volunteered for several years at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and enjoyed teaching the patrons of the aquarium. Bob was a sports enthusiast! He loved watching baseball and football. If a USC football game was on, you would know that Bob was watching it! He liked participating in fantasy baseball and keeping up on baseball stats. Bob also enjoyed Dixieland Jazz music, eating lobster, fishing, cooking and spending time with family and loved ones. He loved Jesus Christ and died as a member of the Catholic Church.
Robert Gartin is preceded in death by his daughter, Cherilyn Anne Gartin Hawkley and wife, Andree Gartin. He is survived by his son, Robert Scott Gartin, his daughter-in-law, Elaine “Lainy” Gartin, his sister and bother-in-law, Geraldine and Glen Philips, his beloved Coral Wylie and her daughter, Jennifer Wylie. Bob is also survived by his grandchildren: Forrest Gartin, Gretchen Wood, Roselyn Nethercott, Melissa Hawkley, Heather Donigan, Ryan Hawkley, and Christian Dold and 10 great grandchildren and another on the way.
Internment will be at the El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove at a later date. The Paul Mortuary in Pacific Grove is taking care of all funeral arrangements.
