Rev. Robert Schwarz grew up in Chicago, Illinois. His great-grandparents came to Chicago from Rottweil. Germany. Robert loved arts and crafts as a child. While in grade school, he took art classes at a local high school. He had no other formal art classes.
Fr. Bob joined the Jesuit order in 1952 and was ordained in 1965. He taught at Loyola University in Chicago for a number of years. He then served as a US Army Chaplain for twenty-one years, ten of which were in southern Germany. While there, Fr. Bob loved attending local festivals which later became the inspiration for his paintings.
In retirement, Fr. Bob painted often. His collection includes nearly one hundred pieces, many of them in sets of four. At his home, he would display a set for each corresponding festival season. His collection has been passed on to his family.
Fr. Bob lived in Monterey, California and, later, at Canterbury Woods retirement home in Pacific Grove where he passed away at the age of 84.
Mass of Christian Burial with Military Honors will be celebrated at St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove on Friday, June 14 at 1:00. Burial will be at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery in Seaside, California.
