Carmel
Rozalia M. Bernstein, of Carmel, California, passed away peacefully due to stroke complications, surrounded by her family. Born in Budapest, Hungary, she lived in London for 16 years after escaping communist-controlled Hungary in 1956. It was in London that she met her future husband, Leonard Bernstein, and came to reside in the Monterey Bay Area where they pursued their careers in art and opened their galleries in Carmel Highlands and Carmel proper.
In her later years, Mrs. Bernstein studied foreign languages at Monterey Peninsula College, volunteered at the Big Sur Lighthouse for over a decade and pursued her passion for dance with her many great friends at Chautauqua Hall in Pacific Grove. She was also a member and volunteer of Congregation Beth Israel.
Survivors include her son, Julian Bernstein, and a sister-in-law, Judy, in London.
Graveside services will be held this Monday, February 26 at 1:00 pm at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. Everyone is welcome. Please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com to sign Mrs. Bernstein’s guest book and leave messages for her family.
