She was born in Oahu, HI on May 9, 1946. Sherrie graduated from Carmel High School and received a BA from Chico State University. She started her career teaching at the Santa Catalina school for Girls in Monterey. From there, she went on using the skills she learned in college to design a number of beautiful homes in the area, many of which were at Quail Lodge where her father was the real estate sales person after retiring from a distinguished military career in the Navy.
All of her adult life she helped her mother Gwendolyn May care and rescue animals of all kinds. First, with the county SPCA and later, with Gwendolyn’s non profit organization AWIA (Animal Welfare, Information & Assistance). As the years passed, she took on more responsibility for the organization and eventually began running it completely including the financial aspects.
Sherrie was also deeply involved in the Carmel Valley Community in other ways. She joined with Dorothy McEwen to run a non profit, the Carmel Valley Angel Project, which has three benefit programs; The CV Angel Project, The Community Dinner and the Seniors Monthly Luncheon Program. She, again, managed the financial aspects of the non-profit and was the Chair of the Thanksgiving event for many years.
Beyond that, Sherrie served on the CV Recreation & Park Board for many years with distinction. While there, the District expanded the park more than two fold. Sherrie lent her technical expertise to surveying and general development of the park.
For her long and valuable service in all of these areas, Sherrie was awarded the Carmel Valley Good Egg award for 1992 which she proudly and prominently displayed. The award, voted on by previous winners, recognizes outstanding community service “above and beyond” normal expectations.
One of her favorite “accomplishments” was that she was the first female to play the Quail Lodge golf course.
Sherrie is survived by her mother Gwendolyn Rycroft May, brother Rodd and wife Karen May, sister Sue and husband Bob Brooks, Nephew Jason and wife Ginger May, Nephew Jordan and wife Laura White-May and nieces Kaitlyn and Kassidy May.
The family wishes to extend warm thanks to all of the emergency responders, many of whom Sherrie knew and special thanks to neighbors and close friends Chuck and Valerie McKay who stepped in as family for the length of time it took us to arrive, along with Cathi Cristobal.
In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to Cancer research program of your choice.
The Paul Mortuary will be helping the family plan a memorial service in the near future.
