Stuart Pearson Satchell, 67, died peacefully at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula surrounded by his family on July 10, 2026. The youngest of four children, he was born August 16, 1958, at the Old Carmel Hospital to William Hobart Satchell and Gloria McLaren Satchell. The majority of his life was spent in Carmel and Monterey, with minor stints living in Massachusetts, San Francisco, and Denver.
A true Carmel native, his lifelong love was nature. He took every opportunity to kayak Monterey Bay and the Carmel River, hike the gorge in Big Sur, drive up “The 1,” go scuba diving, and talk over bonfires with friends.
In the early ‘70s, you might have spotted Stuart skateboarding Highway 1 with a bedsheet for a sail, or racing downhill as a Quiksilver-sponsored rider. A decade later, he worked with computers while tending bar throughout Carmel, and won the title of Monterey County Space Invaders Champion.
Stuart met his wife, Yvette Lyon, in 1994 at the Hog's Breath Inn, and they later married at the Carmel Mission.
Making friends wherever he went, the community he cultivated fed his soul—whether it was spending hours at the bar storytelling, volunteering at American Legion Post 512, sharing a meal at The Little Swiss Café, gladly driving family and friends to appointments, or kayaking until sunrise—Stuart loved and was loved by many, and will be deeply missed.
Stuart was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ian M. Satchell. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Yvette P. Lyon-Satchell; siblings, Cynthia V. Satchell of Denver, CO, and William H. Satchell of Alexandria, VA; and children, Emma J. Satchell of Chicago, IL, and Keagan W. Satchell of Humboldt, CA.
Arrangements are being made by The Paul Mortuary, with anticipated interment in the El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to American Legion Post 512 Carmel-by-the-Sea.
