The family of Tony Masami Tanaka celebrates his life and lovingly remembers him following his passing on July 20, 2026, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
Born on January 25, 1955, in Fukuoka, Japan, Tony's life, like anyone's, was shaped by both joyful moments and challenging ones, through it all, he had a knack for making his family laugh.
Tony graduated from Monterey High School in 1973 before attending Cal State Long Beach. He built a career in medical and laboratory sales and, together with his wife, Julie, made homes in Pinole, CA, Virginia, Hawaii and Groveland, CA, before returning to the Monterey Peninsula.
Tony is survived by his wife, Julie; their two children, Jenna Poguntke (Mark), Evan Tanaka (Anissa); his grandchildren, Kekoa Poguntke and Harper and James Tanaka; his sister, Nancy Hart (Bob) and his mother, Irene Tanaka. He was preceded in death by his father, James, his son, Kelley, and his grandson, Kai.
His family will remember not only the milestones they shared, but also the everyday conversations, family meals, inside jokes, and the laughter Tony brought to so many moments. It is those moments—simple, joyful, and shared—that they will carry with them always.
Arrangements are being made by The Paul Mortuary. Family and friends are invited to share memories and messages on the mortuary's website.
