

Alan Lawrence Shulman, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday night. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather. Alan is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Elizabeth Shulman; his cherished children, Susan Shulman Pertnoy and husband, Ronnie; Nina Saslove and husband, Joshua; and David H. Shulman and wife, Jill. His legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren: Alexandra Fabrikant and husband, Eric; Samantha Carroll and husband, Brendan; Michael Katzenberg and wife, Meredith; Adam Katzenberg and wife, Hanna Kim; Andrew Katzenberg; Isabella Katzenberg; Harris Mufson and wife, Michal; Brett Mufson and wife, Alexa; Whitney Shashou and husband, Alexander; Alexander Saslove; Jacob Shulman and wife, Amanda; Amanda Shulman Kemp and husband, Alex; Sydney Shulman Desiderio and husband, Michael; and Jonathan Shulman. He also leaves behind 19 great grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Alan was a talented athlete, excelling in baseball during high school. He was recruited by the Chicago White Sox but chose to pursue a legal career instead. He graduated from Brooklyn Law School and built a distinguished practice in international corporate law, including handling a significant case involving the Spanish government.
Alan’s career took an exciting turn when he represented a client who developed Holiday Inns. Intrigued by the hospitality business, he became one of the early franchisees, developing and operating 16 locations. He practiced law for many years on Park Avenue before moving his family to Palm Beach in 1969, where he became actively involved in creating a vibrant Jewish community alongside his first wife, Barbara, the mother of his three children.
An avid tennis player, Alan also embraced new challenges, learning to ski in Switzerland at the age of 50. He and Elizabeth adored family time and made it a priority in their lives. Family ski trips were legendary and Alan ensured the grandchildren learned the joy of skiing.
Alan had a profound impact on the Jewish community through his unwavering commitment to Israel and global Jewish peoplehood. As a Lifetime Trustee of the Jewish Agency, Alan played a pivotal role in shaping policies and strategies that supported Jewish immigration to Israel, including crucial missions rescuing people from Ethiopia and the Former Soviet Union. Through his philanthropy and as a former Board Chair of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, Alan was instrumental in numerous initiatives that aimed to strengthen Jewish identity, education, and community development here locally, in Israel, and around the world.
Alan’s funeral will take place on Sunday, December 1, at 2 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach, located at 190 North County Road in Palm Beach.
