Howard R. Mirkin, 91, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida passed away peacefully in the V.A. Hospice on Thursday, January 1, 2015. He is survived by Esther, his beloved wife of 57 years, his daughter Helene, son Mark, daughter in law Liz, grandson Kenny and granddaughter Emily. Born and raised in the Bronx, Howard entered the Army in 1943 upon his graduation from New York University, and spent three years in Germany proudly serving his country. After the war, he taught science at Fairleigh Dickinson University and then began a career in fundraising in New York which he continued until moving from Baldwin, Long Island to West Palm Beach in 1985 to dabble in other vocations including working for the IRS and then for H&R Block to keep busy. He derived great pride from having put his daughter through the University of North Carolina – Greensboro and his son through Duke University and Duke Law School. He enjoyed following the New York Mets and the New York Islanders while living in New York and then the Duke Blue Devils since 1977. Howard and Esther enjoyed traveling, Broadway shows, living the good life and spending time with their devoted daughter, son, daughter in law and grandkids, and kvelled over grandson’s Kenny’s work in the hotel business in Cincinnati and granddaughter Emily’s studies in biotechnology program at Palm Beach State College. The Mirkin family wishes to express its deep gratitude to the medical team at the V.A. Hospital in West Palm Beach, especially Dr. David Cohen. Adored by all who knew him, Howard will be remembered forever for his easy smile, corny jokes and affability. May he rest in peace! Graveside Services will be held 1:30pm, Sunday, January 4, 2015 at IJ Morris at the Star of David Cemetery of the Palm Beaches.
