Autry was born on August 17, 1937 to Jessie Earl Davis and Reba Bell Atteberry in Handley, Texas. After an accident in 1938 left Reba widowed, Autry and his sister, Vivian Davis Kramer, spent eight years at the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Texas, until Reba married Jack Lutes, the man he knew as Dad, and they settled in Clute, Texas. Upon graduating from Brazosport High School in 1955, Autry served as a mechanic in the US Army and then went on to a lifetime career in the plastics industry.
In 1962, Autry met Linda Jean Everett and he told her on that day that he was going to marry her. They eloped to Mexico in 1964 and shortly after settled in La Porte, Texas. Autry and Linda raised two children, Kennon Wayne Davis and Dina Lynn Davis Matthews. Autry enjoyed traveling with his family and spending time with his friends. Autry’s two loves outside his family were football and the deer lease. He was known by a generation of La Porte youth as Coach Davis from his years coaching little league sports. He loved to hunt and enjoyed the comradery of his fellow outdoorsmen even more than hunting itself.
Autry was preceded in death by his wife Linda Jean, parents Jessie, Reba and Jack, and sister Vivian. He is survived by son Kennon and wife Debra, daughter Dina and husband Theodore Matthews. Grandchildren, Davis Matthews, Molly Matthews, Parker Matthews, Jayde Davis Samac and Colton Davis, and two great grandchildren.
