Barbara was born on January 5, 1934, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Aubrey and Elaine Puckett. After graduating from Prairie View High School in Nocona, Texas, she continued her education at Texas Wesleyan College and Texas Christian University.
While living in Wichita Falls, Barbara met the love of her life, Paul, who was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base. They married in November 1959 and built a life together centered on faith and family. Together, they raised their children and had the joy of watching their family grow with the arrival of grandchildren. In the years that followed, Barbara’s family continued to grow, eventually welcoming a new generation of great-grandchildren.
Barbara held several jobs throughout her life, with her final position at an insurance agency. She retired early to help care for her grandchildren, a role that brought her immense joy. She was a constant presence in the lives of her children and grandchildren, attending sporting events, recitals, concerts, and countless other activities. She even traveled to tournaments to cheer on her grandchildren, always making sure they knew Grandma was there to support them.
Barbara was a longtime member of Golden Acres Baptist Church, where her faith was an important part of her life. She served her church by teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sharing her faith and caring for generations of children within her church community.
Barbara loved the holidays, and for many years, her home was where the family gathered to celebrate. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter meant big meals prepared by Barbara and a house filled with family. And no matter how much her grandchildren protested, there always seemed to be onions in the salad (a detail that eventually became a running family joke).
As her grandchildren grew older, new traditions found their way into the holidays. At Thanksgiving, the James Avery catalog would sometimes make an appearance, with the grandchildren looking through it and choosing their favorite pieces for Christmas. For many years, Barbara also enjoyed buying the girls matching outfits. These little traditions became part of what made holidays at Grandma’s house so special.
Barbara was also known for her sweet tooth. Cookies, candy, and desserts were something she was rarely one to turn down. Even after developing diabetes, her love of a good treat never quite disappeared. She may have been told to watch her sugar, but Barbara believed there was always a little room for negotiation when dessert was involved.
Barbara enjoyed caring for her plants, crafting, arranging flowers, traveling, and sharing a good game with friends. She played Bunco for many years and looked forward to weekly card games with a group of ladies from church, where the friendships and fellowship were every bit as important as the cards themselves.
Barbara also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with her husband, sister, and brother-in-law. Their travels took them to places such as Colorado, Nevada, and Hawaii, among many others. More than the destinations, those trips gave Barbara the opportunity to see new places, share adventures with people she loved, and create lasting memories along the way.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey and Elaine Puckett, and her beloved husband, Paul.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula Carter, her son, Greg Haas and his wife, Connie, and her sisters, Carolyn Hibbens and her husband, Gene, and Laura Midcap and her husband, Danny.
Barbara is also survived by her grandchildren, Kirstin Sherrell and her husband, Steven, Ashlie Haas, Jamie Montgomery and her husband, Ryan, Kaley Carter, and Caden Carter, along with her great-grandchildren, Madison Sherrell, Aubrey Sherrell, Kyler Sherrell, Leo Montgomery, and Quinn Montgomery. She will also be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held at Grand View Funeral Home in the Yellow Rose Chapel, located at 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas 77505, on September 30, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. A Celebration of Barbara's Life will begin at 11:00 am. Immediately following, she will be laid to rest at Grand View Memorial Park.
