

Clayton was born January 22, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York to Clayton Poindexter Smith, Sr. and Frances Bernard Smith. He lived the majority of his young life in Orange, Texas where he was active in various sports, church activities at First United Methodist Church of Orange, and was a member of DeMolay. He graduated from Lutcher Stark High School in 1964. He attended Lamar University where he obtained an associate's degree. He moved to Jasper, Texas in 1967 and worked for the Visador Company. He met his future wife Marion "Renee" Griffith of Jasper, Texas and moved to Pasadena. This is where he began his boilermaker/welder career working for Sinclair Oil Corporation which later became Lyondell. He retired after 32 years at the young age of 55. He was a member of Local Union 4-227 and B.P.O.E. (Elks Lodge) #2322 in Kemah. Dexter loved dancing. He was a dog lover, avid woodworker, loved fishing, riding bicycles, gardening, but most of all spending time with his grandchildren. His real talent was singing Red Sails in the Sunset in his Donald Duck voice.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 52 years, Renee Smith; his sister Terry Smith Maffitt (Mike) of Olive Branch, MS; his children Michael Smith of Deer Park, TX, Sandy Smith Pearson (Rodney) of Deer Park, and Clay Smith (Stacie) of Pasadena. Grandchildren: Ronnie Pearson, Jocelynn Smith, Austin Fairchild, Corey Pearson, Kelsea Fairchild, Hailey Smith, Clayton Smith, and Brooklynn Pearson. Great-grandchildren: Aspen Fairchild, Payton Pearson, Rylee Smith, and Kamry Fairchild. He also leaves behind sister-in-law, Denise Griffith of Jasper, several nephews and nieces, and longtime best friend Carl Womack (Kim).
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents Clayton Poindexter Smith, Sr. and Frances Bernard Smith, brother Terrence Lee "Bo" Smith, and longtime best friend Daniel Garcia.
Visitation will be held Monday, May 9, 2022 from 1:00PM to 2:00PM with a Celebration of Clayton's Life beginning at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Grand View Funeral Home, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas 77505. He will be laid to rest Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 11:00AM at Hancock Cemetery in Jasper, Texas alongside his parents and brother.
