Dave was born in Houston, TX on December 27, 1963 to William and Mary Black. He grew up in Deer Park, TX, graduating from Deer Park High School in 1982. He graduated from University of Texas at Austin in 1986 receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration.
He got his start in the custom home building business at Perry Homes and grew to create his own successful business D. Black Custom Homes. He had a special bond with his coworkers some of whom worked with him for over 20 years. They helped him coordinate the construction of some of the most beautiful homes in Houston.
Dave was an avid traveler and spent much of his downtime exploring Europe and the United States.
Dave was a giving spirit, and, like his mother, he led with generosity in every aspect of his life. Words can’t convey the kindness and humanity that he imparted upon everyone around him. Dave actively sought opportunities to help others. Most recently, he served as the president of the Zina Garrison Academy Board of Directors for five years. During this time, he helped to guarantee that underprivileged youth had access to the resources they need to become distinguished citizens. He served on the Advisory Board for Recipe for Success and Hope Farms for the last three years: organizations that fought childhood obesity by teaching children a new understanding of their food. During that time, he donated the labor for the construction of their gathering barn, which is named for him. He also served on the Board of Directors for gallery HOMELAND, which helped to raise cultural awareness in the community. He was passionate about helping youth in his community and wanted to ensure that every soul had an opportunity to reach his or her full potential. His exhaustive efforts to fight for equality and support those less fortunate will have reverberating effects for decades to come.
One of the ways that he accomplished this was through the creation of the Winston Contemporary Art Gallery with Kevin. The gallery acted as a platform for artists, poets, and the community to discuss and address social justice issues.
Family was not just a word to Dave, and his family extended far past his bloodline. Friends and coworkers were invited into Dave’s family from the first encounter. Dave ensured that every member of his family was always secure and happy.
He was succeeded by his common law spouse Kevin, their dog Bam Bam, three brothers, one sister, his sisters-in-law, his brother-in-law, and their families.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that a donation be made to the Interfaith Helping Hands. Please make checks payable to Interfaith Helping Hands.
