Dave was a very nice young man and I really enjoyed getting to know him at Camp Hope. My heart breaks for each of “my guys” I have lost and I pray for comfort for your family. I know he loved you all very much.

I met Dave in Iraq. I was a Navy Reservist called to active duty as an "Individual Augmentee". That means I was pulled away from my family and my normal civilian life and sent to a war zone by myself rather than as part of a military unit. Essentially, I was a ‘fish out of water’ and was scared of what those next 9 months would be like. When I got to the base where I would serve my time, I was fortunate to get assigned to Dave's quarters as one of his roommates. We instantly became friends. His smile, laugh, and his attitude about life helped me get through my time there.

Dave was such a great guy that when he returned from Iraq me and another shipmate of mine tried to convince him to move to the Seattle area where we lived. I was disappointed that he didn't make the move because we would've had a blast.

A few years later the Iraq War caught up with me. I became an emotional wreck and was losing control. At that same time Dave was going through the same experience due to the same reasons that I was. He and I would talk at least once a week trying to help each other out. Finally, Dave sought help. He then pushed and inspired me to do the same. If it wasn’t for Dave’s kindness and love I don’t know where I’d be today. I credit him for helping me to get my life back on track.

I will be forever grateful for meeting Dave, becoming his friend, and experiencing his joy, his love, and his kindness.

I worked with Dave during his time at Camp Hope and was his AA sponsor. It really breaks my heart that he didn’t continue what seemed to be a good start towards a happy sober life. My prayers are with the family, especially his young daughter.
