Sending condolences for your loss. I will never forget how much David cared for my family when we were in crisis. He was a true and loving friend to Mark and I am blessed to have known him. 
May you feel God's peace in the days to come.

I can tell many stories of David. His love of burnt chocolate chip cookies. The several attempts he made to burn down his shed. His painful gait as he walked which he called “athletic”. When the Whataburger employee asked if he wanted a refill, he always held up his empty fry carton. I saw him with three pairs of reading glasses on his person while managing to not wear any of them where he could actually read.

I also know this about DW; he loved his wife, and his daughters and his grandchildren completely. He had a sometimes gruff exterior but he cared for all the people around him. So many people he worked with, myself included, went to David with our frustrations and complaints and he listened and pointed out the things we had missed.  How big the full picture was and how passing our frustrations really were. 

It was an honor to know him and I think all of us from his work family will miss him very much.

My fondest memory of David is from three months after we first met. During my very first training evaluation, he asked me if I was stupid and promptly ran me out of his office. That was 29 years ago.

At the time, not truly knowing David, a whole range of emotions ran through me. I took it as a challenge. When the next evaluation came around, I knew everything. Partway through, he stopped me again and ran me out of his office—this time without the “stupid.” That moment set our friendship in motion.

David gave me only what I needed to succeed: a good kick in the pants. In that moment, he became someone I looked up to and someone who always had my respect—from the day he first called me stupid.

David had a special heart that few possess and was an overall genuine person. I am honored to have had his friendship and to have been a recipient of his thoughtfulness, kindness, and kick in the pants. I know he had the same positive impact on many others. Even now, I can still hear him ask, “Are you adding value?”

My family and I send our sincere condolences and prayers to his family. He is deeply missed, yet he will always remain in our hearts.

David was born to be a leader. I worked with David for many years in the control center and carpooled with him for several years. 
David was never ok with the status quo. He always wanted to improve the control center and its employees.

On our many hours of driving back and forth to work we had many conversations about work, sports and what was going on in the world. I enjoyed the talks about work the most.  I always enjoyed his take on issues and problems. 

David had a deep love for Lisa and his family. He enjoyed watching his girls in sports.

David you will be missed by everyone that knew you.

I worked directly with David in the Shell Pipeline Control Center (CC) from 2003-2015.  It's difficult to sufficiently describe him because, as one employee told me “David is David and somethings just can’t be coached or changed”.   To me, David was:
•	Cantankerous – he levied an incredible number of insults at everyone.  He told Wylie Stice that his shirt one day looked like a pillowcase.  He mocked Donald Smith for years after once wearing mis-matched shoes to work.  For her baby shower, he gifted Catherine Glaze with a roll of duct tape and other junk he found in his office.  He dished it out but could also take it.  He freely admitted to accidentally setting his shed on fire and shared photos of the nail he shot through his fingers during a home project.  
•	Caring – underneath David’s sometimes gruff exterior, he had a heart of gold.  He volunteered to read to underprivileged kids and brought joy on Snow Days at two different elementary schools. During a flood he personally drove Controllers to work in his truck when they were stranded and couldn’t get downtown.       
•	Competitive – David was fiercely competitive at everything including company basketball tournaments, at weight-loss contests he spearheaded which were immediately followed by donut eating contests, and other events like our Pipeline Rodeo and ugly sweater contests. He was overly proud during the year the CC held the basketball tournament trophy.
•	Competent – he spent most of his career in the CC.  His influence as a trainer, coach, and mentor will endure for many years to come, as he prepared scores of Controllers for their important role. He managed to make a serious part of our business fun, while assuring folks knew what they were supposed to do and then making sure they did it.  He knew the CC’s operational procedures inside and out, having helped to re-write them, training staff, and enforcing them.  
I’m thankful to have known him for so many years.  RIP, David.

David was one of the first people I met when I joined Shell 26 years ago.  He had a special way with words and made sure I knew I was in Texas!  He was one of the most genuine people I have met and good for at least two laughs.  He made a real difference through the way he showed up for others, and he will be truly missed. My heart breaks for you guys. David was my youth softball, basketball, and volleyball coach. He was always making us laugh. One time we did very poorly in a volleyball game, and he came over with a paper sack over his head. He said he was so embarrassed for us that he had to hide his face from everyone in the convention center. It was just the comic relief we needed to cheer up and do well the next game. He was honestly like a second dad growing up. Many of my greatest sports memories had him in the background, he was truly one of a kind.

I am just so sorry for your great loss.  My heart breaks for you and your entire family. 💔 David loved you and your kids and grandchildren more than life itself.   You were blessed to have a man like that!  When I lost Blake it was devastating to say the least.  I'm here if you need a friend.

The Bradley family is so sorry to hear about David's passing.  We spent many hours at the softball field and he was so much fun.  We pray for your family and may your beautiful memories help you get through the difficult days ahead.   Many prayers, Scott and Brenda Bradley and family.

I worked with David for several years. I considered him a friend, coworker & supervisor, and mentor. David is very special in many ways; he will be missed, but never forgotten. My condolences to the family; RIP David.

Dave was a great neighbor and friend and all around great man. He and Lisa lived next door to us for 20 years known to my family as neighbor Dave and neighborette. Dave put up with our kids shenanigans with a grin. He always had a project going and usually turned out good. He turned his backyard and patio into a mini museum unlike any other. He always had a helping hand if needed and Dave like advice. We will sadly miss Dave. He is definitely one of a kind. God speed Dave. We love your family. Lee and Rhonda, Aaron, Chris, Nicole, Courtney, and Papa Joe.

I met David in Louisiana when he came to Norco to be an Oil Movement’s Controller for Shell Pipeline.

It was my privilege to know David Scruggs as a great friend, neighbor, husband, father and grandfather. He was without a doubt a man that I held in high regards and had the most respect.
There are no words that I can say to convey to his family for the loss that they must feel with his passing. All I can say is, I thank God that I knew a man like David Scruggs. He will always be remembered by me and my family.

Went to Jr High and High School with Scruggs 50+ years ago. 
We happened into each other about 10 years ago in the New Orleans airport. So we sat down and had a few beers to catch up. A great memory. 

May this Good Man enjoy Heaven's gifts.

David was a leader in the control center. I spent about 25 years in the Houston control center, so I was around him quite a bit and learned a lot about operations just by watching how he handled things day to day. He was always looking out for his people, giving them opportunities, and building his team up over and over again. He was someone you could count on.  Hugs and prayers for the family!

Blessed to have crossed paths with David throughout my career. Great man to know   Rest easy my friend.  Condolences to the family and sympathies for your loss.

David was a great manager who paved the way for many of us who worked along side of him. He made our work family the culture it was and looked out for his people. He was honest and never wavered in his integrity and commitment to all of us. He will be sincerely missed.
