Geraldine was born on August 22, 1939 in Austin, Texas to William T. and Elva Marie Lay. She passed away on Sunday, October 21, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Gerald E. Garner, and her sisters: Bobbie Jean Lay and Billie Marie Simons. She is survived by her three daughters: Ginger Moon and husband Bobby, Jodie Scherer and husband Chris, and Christy Garner; son, Gerald “Bubba” Garner and wife Melissa; five grandchildren: Megan Moon, Corbin Scherer, Morgan Garner, Chloe Scherer, and David Garner; sister, Grace Brown and husband James; brother, Richard Lay and wife Ginger; brother-in-law Billy Simons, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Geraldine Lay grew up in South Houston and was Miss Pasadena High School in the class of 1957. She studied music at the University of North Texas where she met and married Gerald Garner in 1959. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, known for her creativity and selflessness. She leaves a legacy of a strong and passionate faith in God to those who called her “Mom”, “Grammy”, “Dene Dene” and “Auntie Geraldine.”
Geraldine was one of the original members of the Kleinwood Church of Christ in Houston and taught the 4-5 year old Bible class there for many years. Later, she worked as a bookkeeper for a law firm and then in the facilities department at Lyondell. She became a “mother” to every group of people she was with, even while in the hospital. Her stories, her cooking, her laughter and her love will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
"We're Coming Home"
We're coming home, Father - My siblings and me,
For home is where we all want to be.
Home on earth is what we loved,
But we are looking forward to a home above.
The love You have shown us, all through these years,
Will help us forget all of our pain and fears.
Yes, we're coming home to heaven above,
To be with all those we dearly loved.
Bless our sweet and loving children dear Lord,
wherever they may roam,
So that one day, they too can say... “We're coming home.”
