Gwayne Paul Burkett, 75, of Friendswood, Texas passed away on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. He was born July 4, 1942 in Lafayette, Louisiana to Hulen and Bernice (Vice) Burkett.
Anyone who knew Gwayne would tell you he was a man of principle and a man of few words. After serving in the United States Army from 1961 to 1967, Gwayne received an Honorable Discharge and settled in Pasadena, Texas. As a husband, he provided for, protected, and cherished his wife Linda for 55 years tirelessly caring for her in sickness and in health. Beginning around 1976, he and their three sons constructed a home in Crockett, Texas, creating a lifetime of memories that will forever be cherished by his sons.
As a father, his tough love instilled character and responsibility in his three children, all of whom are productive, respectful, and prosperous men. Gwayne loved his grandchildren as well, his eyes and smile lighting up anytime he was with them.
Gwayne was a gifted master carpenter who filled his home with beautifully handmade furniture and décor. In his spare time, he generously donated countless hours and his skillful expertise helping to restore the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA, harbored in Galveston Bay, Texas.
Gwayne leaves behind a multitude of memories for his family and friends. He is survived by his three sons; Terry Burkett and wife, Lucie; David Burkett and wife, Wendy; and Scott Burkett; grandchildren, Alex Burkett and wife, Ashley; Shelby Burkett, Sabra Burkett, Jacob Burkett, Samantha Corley; great-grandchildren, Sarah Burkett, Abigail Burkett, Jackson Burkett, and Harper Gwayne Burkett; brothers and sisters, John Larry Burkett and wife, Brenda; Kerry Burkett and wife, Dawn; Cheryl Wright and husband, David; Cyre Kay Green; and Cydne Burkett and wife, Cynthia and numerous friends. He will certainly be missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda Jeanette and his grandson, Jeffrey Burkett.
