Gary was born on June 14, 1952, in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1970, he proudly answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. His decision was inspired by his uncle and namesake, James Love Norris ("Uncle Jim”), a United States Marine who was killed in action while serving in Okinawa, Japan, during World War II. Gary carried the pride, honor, and values of being a Marine throughout his life. He devoted much of his life to radio broadcasting, while also serving in air traffic control during his career. He served as the production manager for KSEV 700AM radio and brought his talent to numerous iconic Houston stations, including 101 KLOL, 92.9 KKBQ, 100.3 KILT, and 740AM, among others in Texas. An incredible musician, he played in bands continuously since the seventh grade and had a natural ability to entertain and connect with people. He was passionate about football (especially Tennessee teams), loved spending time on the golf course, and held a deep affection for his beloved cats and dogs. Known for his positive, lighthearted attitude and quick wit, Gary was always cracking jokes. He was a deeply compassionate man who loved well, leaving a legacy as a devoted partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Gary leaves behind his loving partner of over 15 years, Julie Cloninger, and her sons Jeremy and Cody. He is survived by his oldest daughter, Bonnie Smith, and her husband Chris; his granddaughters, Annalee Medina and her husband Zack, Madeline Dyess, Macie Lemus and her husband Damian, and Marilynn; and his great-grandchildren, Everleigh, Penelope, Ryker, and Lyla.
He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Olson, and her significant other, Shay Hanson; his grandsons, Jordan Key, Jackson Key, and Jayden Key; his granddaughters, London Key and Olivia Hanson; his sister, Debbie Bowden; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Most importantly, Gary knew and loved the Lord. His family finds great comfort in knowing that he is now at peace in the presence of Jesus.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Corinne Deekens and Walter Elliott; his sister, Sherry Trainer; his brother, Walter "Bubba" Elliott; and his niece, Chante Moore.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at Grand View Funeral Home, Yellow Rose Chapel, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas 77505, on June 12, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Gary's Life beginning at 2:00 pm.
