Karl Edward Ash Jr. was born to Karl Edward Ash Sr. and Marion (Crowther) Ash on October 12, 1937 in Port Arthur, Texas. He passed away surrounded by his loving family in Pasadena, Texas at the age of 84 on November 5, 2021. Karl was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Jerry Scott and brother-in-law James Teinert.
Karl is survived by his wife of 64 years Jo Ann (Teinert) Ash of Pasadena; daughter, Dana Faith Gray; daughter Karla Ann Rhein & husband, Tom of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Blaine Gray & Brittaney Allen of Houston, Ashlyn Gray of Pasadena; Derek Rhein of Corpus Christi, Dr. Cara Gray Silvey and husband Phillip of Houston; Tori Rheinwood & wife, Amy of Houston; great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Joanah Gray of Pasadena; sister, Marylin Scott of Winnie and 4 nephews.
Karl spent his early years coast to coast from Texas to New York to Florida and Washington state while his father served in the USCG. After the 8 years of service, his parents settled back in Texas. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur in 1955 and attended Lamar University in Beaumont studying chemistry. He and Jo Ann married on May 17, 1958. Karl found his career working in the petro-chemical industry in 1968, starting with Du Pont and retiring in 2003 with FMC.
Karl loved his family, and everybody was family. He believed strongly in education sending both daughters to private parochial schools, and both went on to graduate from Texas A&M University (Whoop!!!). Karl doted on his family. He was a patriarch in a matriarchy, always considering kindness before “that’s enough”. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his absolute joy. He wouldn’t wear you out with pictures but was quick with stories of their successes and bumbling's.
Karl was an avid sportsman. While golfing the week of his retirement, he scored his only hole-in-one and advised his family of this feat on necessary occasions. He and Jo Ann loved to travel to golf destinations across the country. He would play golf, and Jo Ann would enjoy his happiness. He believed you could tell a lot about a person by playing golf with them - there were no mulligans. Fishing was more than a passion; he reveled in making the fish tremble. His favorite “go to” artificial bait was a “green thing”. He always insisted on having a beer and savoring the boat ride home. Karl loved his yard and garden. He didn’t bring home a dozen roses, he brought Jo a dozen rose bushes and planted her a rose garden. He and Jo Ann found great enjoyment tending the soil and growing their flowers and vegetables along with the family. He took great pride in his lawn while resting on the patio.
We miss you Karl, Daddy, Pappoo, Mr. Ash.
