Laura was born on September 19, 1957, on the outskirts of Matamoros near the small town of Santa Adelaida. She was born on Rancho Guadalupe to Higinio Garcia Reyna and Olivia Pinales Sanchez. One of ten children, she grew up surrounded by the love, warmth, and lively energy of a large, close-knit family.
In 1975, Laura married Cosme Torres, and in 1980 she immigrated to the United States, where she built a beautiful life and established longstanding roots in Pasadena, Texas. She was a devoted homemaker, mother, wife, and later a proud grandmother whose love shaped every corner of her family’s life.
Laura is survived by her children Mayra Torres, Gorda Torres, Abiel Torres and his wife Janie, and Ivan Torres and his partner Rachel Serrato. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren—Noah, Jonah, Camilo, and Aliel Torres—as well as her many siblings and extended family members who cherished her deeply.
To her family, she was lovingly known as “Wawis,” and to her grandchildren, simply “Mami.” She was a gracious woman of remarkable character—admired for her homemaking skills, her high standards, and her unwavering dedication to caring for those she loved. Her love knew no bounds, and she poured it generously into her family every single day.
An extraordinary cook, Laura’s meals—especially her legendary tamales—left lasting impressions on all who were fortunate enough to taste them. Despite battling renal disease for many years, she defied medical odds with her strength and perseverance. Even through hardship, she continued to craft, create, spend time with family, and enjoy shopping, which always brought her joy. To call her a warrior barely captures the depth of her courage, grit, and grace.
Laura loved cooking, crafting, designing thoughtful gift baskets, and creating beautiful floral arrangements for various events throughout her life. Forever productive, creative, and giving, she shared her talents generously with those around her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Higinio Garcia Reyna.
