Mary "Ginger" Hasson

November 19, 1934 – August 21, 2026

Mary Virigina “Ginger” Hasson, 91, of Houston, Texas, peacefully joined her Heavenly Father on the afternoon of Friday, August 21, 2026. Throughout the morning, family members visited with her and lovingly said “goodbye” to her in her home, where she comfortably lived for over 60 years.

Ginger was born in Tela, Honduras, to Edwin Million Cobb and Gladys Mabel Evans Cobb. Mr. Cobb died when Ginger was 5 years old. Soon after, her mother married a wonderful man, Floyd Blackmon (Pa Pa) who played a major role in her life. For many years, Floyd was employed by the United Fruit Company, later named “Chiquita Banana” which enabled Ginger and her family to enjoy the benefits of growing up in a Tropical Paradise. Many days were spent at the beach, swimming in the ocean, dancing, going to parties, riding horses, along with enjoying Central American foods which she immensely enjoyed throughout her life.

The community of Chiquita Banana was a tight-knit family and Ginger stayed close friends with many of these families throughout her lifetime. Each year, she eagerly awaited The Chiquita Reunion, nicknamed “The Quince”, and enjoyed reminiscing about “the good old days”, dancing, laughing, eating and drinking with her child-hood friends.

Ginger attended school at an American school in Honduras through the eighth grade. She left Honduras alone, on a ship, arriving in New Orleans in 1948, at the age of 12. A bus took her from New Orleans to San Marcos Academy in Texas, where she attended high school, graduating in May of 1952. After high school Ginger attended and graduated from Baylor University and completed her lifelong dream of becoming a registered nurse.

Before graduating from college, Ginger met a handsome young man, Robert Hasson, on a blind date. Their love and attraction for each other was strong and they married soon after meeting at Genoa Baptist Church, on November 24, 1955. During their first 13 years of marriage, Bob and Ginger had four children: Sandra, Cindy, Wendy and Robby.

Ginger is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Robert Hasson, Sr., her beloved son Robert Hasson, Jr., her parents Floyd and Gladys Blackmon, her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Bob Birdsong, her niece Debbie Pollock, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Thelma Hasson and nephew Will Hasson, her aunt, Mary Evans McDowell Smith.

Ginger leaves behind her #1sidekick – “Doggie,” who, for nine years, rarely left her side. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses Sandra Vance and David, Cynthia Allen, Wendelyn Dixon and Clarence; and daughter-in-law, Rene’ Hasson. "Maw Maw" also leaves behind her 12 grandchildren and their spouses; and 18 great-grandchildren: Andrew Vance, Russell Vance, wife Shedearia and daughters Mackenzie and Keri, Daniel Vance, wife Paola, Ryan Allen, sons Ollie and Kaedon Tiet, Keith Allen, Scott Allen, wife Silvana, and children Gabriela Ardila and Anthony Allen, Nathan Schmidt, wife, Janie, children Charles, Miles and Lola, Christina Miller, husband Troy and children Gunner, Grace and Ginger, Dean Dixon, wife Lesley and sons Benjamin and Beau, Jeremy Hasson, daughter Hazelyn and fiancé Kelsey Tobin and daughters Emmalynn and Harper, Sheree James, husband Alex and children Harper, Jasper and Cooper. She is also survived by 2 step grandchildren, Ashley Blizzard and Jillian Sierra, and 8 step great-grandchildren Jayden, Nolan, Jordyn, Justin, Brody, Natalie, Elizabeth and Elijah. Other immediate family members include nephew and nieces - Jim Hasson, Susan Doggette, Jackie Dugas, and Kim Rzeszutko, cousins and their wives, Scott McDowell and wife, Beth, Gordon McDowell and wife Tammy.

A group of amazing caregivers assisted “Ma Ma,” with special attention, comfort and love in her home, during the last three years of her life. A heartfelt thank you to Nina Miller, granddaughter, Sarah Rivera, Lupita Madrigal, Ana Rodriguez, Cassadie Newell and Cruz Villarreal for ensuring her last days were filled with love and laughter. The family will be forever grateful to the pastor she adored, Arte Cadar, for his special undivided attention given to Ginger each Sunday morning, with words of adoration and welcome, always spoken in Spanish.

Ginger left a legacy after her passing and, as her late husband frequently described her as “an angel on earth.” She effortlessly exhibited a Christ-like spirit her whole life and often teared up when her Jesus was spoken about. She was a shining light and a natural teacher of unconditional love to all who met her. The description, “sweetest person I ever met” were spoken oftentimes when expressed by others. All that knew her loved her.

Visitation will be held at Grand View Funeral Home, Yellow Rose Chapel, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas 77505, on September 12, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life beginning at 1:00 pm. Immediately following she will be laid to rest at Grand View Memorial Park/Bethany Cemetery.
