Born on January 10, 1956, in Victoria, Texas, Mike lived a life marked by quiet faithfulness, steadfast devotion, and deep love for his family. He met the love of his life, Penny, in San Marcos while attending Southwest Texas State University. Their story began while working together at the same Jack in the Box—one of many family connections formed there, including his brother and sister-in-law. Mike and Penny were married for 47 years, building a life rooted in love, service, and commitment.
Mike worked in commercial roofing for over 40 years, serving as an estimator and later a project manager. Known for his integrity, strong work ethic, and reliability, he was respected by colleagues and clients alike. Outside of work, Mike’s greatest joy was his family. If he wasn’t on the job, he was in the stands or audience—faithfully attending games, recitals, and events for his children and later his grandchildren. He also lovingly supported Penny in her ministries within the United Methodist Church, always ready to serve quietly behind the scenes.
Mike was genuine and humble—a quiet servant, always ready to help and deeply devoted to his family. He lived his faith through action rather than words, leaving a legacy of love and service. As Scripture so fittingly reflects his life: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Margie Buckert; his in-laws, Harry and Marge Sexton; and beloved aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife, Penny Buckert; his children Amanda Horton (Luke), Doug Buckert (Michelle), and Kimberly Valdez (Katy Ayoub); and his former son-in-law, Michael Valdez. He was a devoted grandfather to ten grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly: Colin, Elijah, Davis, Jacob, Matthew, Oliver, Elizabeth, Graham, Abigail, and Sebastian.
He is also survived by his siblings Ann Fiala, Andy Buckert (Laquita), and Bill Buckert (Brenda); in-laws Ronny Sexton (Millie) and Robby Sexton; nieces and nephews Stephanie (Scott), Jack, Sam (Katie), Barbara (Mike), Shannon, Aubrey (Andy), Shane (Nelly), Deyanna (Paul) and Michelle (Roy); ten great-nieces and nephews and great-great niece. Mike is further survived by close extended family, especially Katie and Larry Kurtz, the Pribyls, the Webers, the Keeses, the Stoeckle’s and many others who were deeply meaningful in his life.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, January 10th (his 70th birthday) in the Yellow Rose Chapel of Grand View Funeral Home located at 8501 Spencer Hwy Pasadena, TX 77505.
Mike’s life was one of quiet impact, faithful presence, and enduring love. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
