Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and husband of nearly 50 years, Sammie Dawson Petty. She is survived by her sons Warren and wife Connie and Steven and wife Myra.
Ruth’s greatest joy was her family. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren, Jason and wife Krystal, Eric and wife Gina, Lauren and husband Marshall, Sean and wife Jenni and Chad and wife Kelli. Through these unions she was blessed with 7 great-grandchildren, Ella, Beckham, Fox, Zachary, Sammie, Chloe, and Layla.
Ruth enjoyed traveling with many groups of friends. She was a member of the Garden Club, the Grandmother’s Club, the Red Hat Society and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a charter member of Sharon Lutheran Church, which later merged with another church to form Peace Lutheran Church. She worked diligently for Meals on Wheels and as a cafeteria worker in the Pasadena ISD for 10 years. Her most recent job was the Wedding Coordinator for Peace Lutheran Church. In addition to these activities, Ruth volunteered at San Jacinto Elementary in Deer Park in Kindergarten mentoring students in reading and math. She was affectionately known as ‘Granny Petty’.
Ruth had an extended family called ‘The Circle of Friends’. She was ‘Mom’ or ‘Granny’ to all of them. These were lifelong friends who formed a lasting bond because of Ruth’s warmth and friendship. She will be greatly missed by Peggy and Jerry Pilkington, Darla and Phillip Haygood, Dan and Sandy Smyrl, David and Penny Pilkington, Alana and Jimmy Green, and all of their children.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home. A service of Christian burial will take place on Monday; April 5, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church officiated by Pastor David Tart. Internment will follow at Pettytown Cemetery near Bastrop, Texas.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Patients Medical Center for their dedication and dignified treatment of Ruth. We would also like to thank all of the friends who visited her at home and in the hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
