Dec. 28th, 1954 - Oct. 15th, 2024
Sylvia was born on Dec. 28th, 1954 to parents, Henry Martinez Aguilar & Silvia Emilia Aguilar in San Antonio, TX. She was the oldest of 12 children, often taking on many family responsibilities in caring for her younger siblings. At the age of 15 she accepted a Bible study from Jehovah’s Witnesses and was the first in her family to be baptized. Shortly later her mother and many other family members accepted the truth. She married her love, Abel M. Garcia on August 11th, 1974. They swiftly welcomed their first child, Damaris as the “Honeymoon Baby!” Five years later they welcomed their 3 other children back to back, Ishmael, Jairus and Priscilla.
Many can recall how much Sylvia enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Whether it was for large gatherings or bringing soup to friends that were ill, she was happy to help. Many asked for her signature potato salad, banana bread, or banana pudding. On one of her trips to Colombia she had the privilege and great joy to cook for the Bethelite brothers and sisters. Her reward was how much they loved her cooking! She also had a passion for sewing. Many years she made summer outfits and dresses at convention times for her children. Not to mention many bridesmaids’ dresses and a couple of wedding dresses in her time. She enjoyed making handmade baby & wedding gifts for the friends. Being industrious, Sylvia loved to find a good deal. Whether for her own grandchildren or children in the congregation, she usually bought clothes for them to wear to meetings. And with Sylvia’s own wardrobe, she would complete it by wearing a beautiful flower in her hair. She loved wearing flowers so much she would have one for every occasion.
Traveling with her husband to many places around the world brought her so much joy. Greece, Australia, Japan, Alaska, Colombia, France, Italy, Guam, Mexico, South America, to name a few but Hawaii was her absolute favorite! On each of their trips she and her husband made it a goal to witness to as many people as possible and make new friends with their united worldwide brotherhood. Sylvia loved being a grandmother to her 4 grandchildren, Isabella, Gabriella, Samuel and Katarina. The greatest joy Sylvia had though, was to share the good news about her God. Witnessing informally seemed to come naturally for her. She shared her faith with anyone – from parents, fellow crossing guards over the last 31 years, neighbors, to nurses and doctors in the hospital. Most recently she studied with her next door neighbor for several months. She continued to stay in touch with return visits even while she was in the hospital, reminding them she cared for them. She did not give up on people that she preached to even over many years.
Sylvia also highly valued children and wanted them to feel included and special. Many recall she made costumes & rehearsed with the kids a choreographed dance for their 45th wedding anniversary party. She truly felt blessed with what Jehovah had given her in her lifetime. When nearing the end of her life, her daughters helped her reflect on her past faithful service to Jehovah and the beautiful future he has promised. Both of these facts deeply comforted her. In Sylvia’s own words, she “can’t wait” to cook her favorite dishes and enjoying a meal with everyone once again So please be ready for this special dinner along with many of others returning to us!
